Shamet is the 4th Freshman to get 1st team honors (Doug McDermott, Cleo Littleton, Vernon Yates) and Shamet/McDuffie only the 2nd underclassman pair on the 1st team (Baker/Van Vleet). That's some good company for them.
That is good company. Paul Suellentrop did point out in his report on the selections that Freshman weren't eligible until 1972 (a good year BTW). Cleo was able to play due to an exception put in place during the Korean War for the 1950-51 and 1951-52 seasons. Otherwise the list would be a bit longer. The Big O and Dave the Rave no doubt would be on that list among a number of others.

Either way, he's the 4th in 45 years...

It is the Valley of even pick, no doubt about it.

Hell, not only would EVERY coach pick Shaq before SOB, SOB's mother would pick Shaq before her own son. It's just common sense. One is a nice Valley player, the other is a dominant Valley player.

I'd also much rather have McIntosh than Doyle every day of the week and twice on Sunday but at least that one is up for discussion.

Happy for Conner, his trendline right now is very strong.

Thanks for making me feel old. My point was mainly that the list would have been even more impressive with Oscar Robertson, Dave Stallworth and others of that ilk on it although not sure it would be a very long list.

X wasn't a huge factor at all as a freshman. It's not like he was taking a lot of minutes from Antoine and Cliff.

Two first teamers, both underclassmen, and two third team juniors that came on the last third of the season.

Two new-comers, one on the all-freshman team, one on the all-defense team.

In total, 6 players honored! Still possibilities for POY, FOY, NCOY, DPOY, most improved and sixth man!

UNI tears have started. "But those other two finished behind us in the league, Morgan should be first team" without acknowledging that they were 4 games out of last Place but 8 games from 2nd. Or that Morgans numbers are a byproduct of a horrible team

Yes indeed. Vernon Yates in 1942 (WW-II exception?) and Cleo Littleton (1952). 75 years ago and 65 years ago.

Not sure how much bigger the list would be had Freshman been eligible before 1972. It would still be a very exlcusive list.

We get hurt because we dont roll guys out for 40 or even 30 minutes a game.

Shamet could easily average 20+ a game if we needed him to.

Picking nits, I'd day Shaq is a 2nd teamer over O'Brien, but in reality other than Alize Johnson or McIntosh there aren't any players on this list I would trade for one of our first 11.

I will be the first to admit, that I dont pay that much attention to non WSU players or games.

But I remember guys that have good games against WSU. Doyle, Lee and Johnson had good games against WSU, so in my book, they are deserving.

FOY is in the bag for Landry. POY probably will go to Paris Lee. NCOY will probably be Alize Johnson. DPOY should be Zach Brown. However, 3G said on his radio show Monday that he didn't think Zach would get it because most of the voters don't really understand what makes a good defender. They mostly just look to see who has the most steals and most blocks. Not the guy that gets down in stance and works his butt off trying to shut down the other teams' best offensive players and most often succeeding.

The most improved and the best sixth man I guess are the Captains of the Most Improved Team and All-Bench Team.
I think Aundre Jakson will be the Captain fo the All-Bench Team. Rauno Nurger, Darral Willis and Rashard Kelley should have a shot at this team.

I think Rauno, Rashard, Conner, and Shaq all deserve consideration for most improved. I have a feeling UNI's Bennett Koch may be the Captain of this team. This one is tough to predict.

Coach of the Year -- while I think 3G did the best and most outstanding job considering what he lost from a year ago and considering hou much the team improvied as the year progresses it will probably go to Dan Muller. Still both teams had outstanding seasons and both finished the conference at 17-1 and Illinois State did have to deal with the loss of Mikyle McIntosh (who may actually be their best player). Perhaps the fairest and best outcome would be for these to Coaches to share that award. It won't happen because you know there are more than just a few voters looking for any excuse to vote for someone other than 3G.
