From the article: "University officials received an estimate of around $270,000 to build a javelin area for the MVC meet at Parkview High School, a mile from campus."

Apparently I need to get in the javelin area building market. $600 of quikrete, $150 lawn mower and $30 of white spray paint ought to cover it. Would be a tough day's work, but I've done worse for less than $269,220.

Also, I might know why MSU is broke.

I just looked up the specs for Javelin. We could build this sucker in a day and not have to work for a year or two at those prices.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

It is a humorous number, but apparently it is mostly rooted in the dirt work required, and the precision required for that dirt work.

Still seems ridiculous though, unless they are trying to build the field to a point of level that would make NASA proud, into or off of the side of a mountain.

It's OK. I have years of experience with a Tonka set.

It is important though that the .00025% of the population that participates in college javelin throwing have a place to practice their art in front of the .005% of the population that cares to watch it. Equal opportunity, "you can do anything you set your mind to", and all.

You believe more people watch than participate in these kinds of events?

By sheer support required to carry out the event, yes.

For every 1 participant, it's not unreasonable to assume an audience including 2/3 of parents + significant other.

As for the game, still like MSU +18. Al Michaels does too I bet.
It's probably pretty easy throwing stones culturally. Living in such close proximity to the world's coolest bait shop and the Yakov Smirnov theatre have brought a level of sophistcation to Springpatch of which Wichitans can only dream.
