  • I was only able to find a couple of references which don't shed much light on the issue. One article states that the ice is usually only removed during hockey season when events that require a bare floor such as monster trucks come to town. It can't be cheap to set up the ice so I imagine they remove it only if absolutely necessary.

Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

    • There's zero chance the ice is removed before basketball. It's not a quick process to put the ice back, not to mention the time it takes to paint all the lines, thunder logo, and sponsor logos back on. It can take week to do.

It takes more than a day for sure. BTW the logos are actually decals sandwiched between 2 layers of ice.

The problems we've seen with guys slipping at EU & BU may be due to the courts being poorly insulated from the ice. I can't recall any problems with players slipping at IBA so its possible the court there is properly insulated.

I'd be interested to know if NBA teams that play on top of ice do something different that at most valley arenas. I can't imagine teams shelling out millions in player salary and then risking injury due to poor footing on the court.

Serious question. Has anyone seen any evidence that playing on top of a hockey rink is a player safety issue?
Doesn't Scottrade in St. Louis have ice under the floor? Maybe I just assumed that was the case because of all the hockey stuff hanging around.

Yes, its the home of the St. Louis Blues. The NHL regular season runs through mid April so the ice will be there during Arch madness and any NCAA games.

              • As for Wichita’s Thunder team, arena staff members will have to hurry to replace the basketball court with an ice sheet after the WSU-Oklahoma State game. The Thunder hosts the Allen Americans in an ECHL game at 4 p.m. Sunday.

“It takes about a day to change over,” said Pileckas, who has been with the arena since 2010.

                • By replace I think they mean, remove the court, put the lower seats back in hockey configuration, install the boards and glass, and put the netting back up. All that would take a large chunk of a day. I suppose they might mean laying down new ice, but I can't see why they would have removed the ice when they could cover it and save time and money.

                  • That was a very young Bradley team and lets hope that they continue to improve and provide another top 100 MVC school in the very new future.
