I know I'm gonna get a lot of flack for this.

Every time I hear someone yell "Higgiiiiinns!" I think, "you're an idiot." Higgins is a good ref, he just gets singled out because he's the one ref that half informed basketball fans know. Of course, yes, he makes bad calls as often as any ref. As a server, every once in a while I forget someone's appetizer order. Doesn't mean I'm a bad server.

It would make a lot more sense to hear people yell, "Jansseeennn!" Am I wrong? Converse.

Frankly, I think Higgins is as good a ref as the Shockers will see....Jansen on the other hand is not very good.

I agree that it was the pairing with Jannsen. I like Higgins as a ref, and he always tends to keep the game in control. But I also like to make fun of him a lot for his hair and flamboyant nature.

Higgins is a pretty good ref. The only problem I have is his tendency to insert himself into the game in late and close situations.

I don't know... he works Final Fours, Regionals and early round tournament games every year. Somebody (or a committee) must think he is pretty good.
Fact of the matter is he is one of the top 10 officials in the country. If you can find better officials to come work Valley games, then give EJ a call at the main office and submit your resume.

The only reason I don't really like Higgins is he has an ego. And I feel like that's becoming the norm with NCAA reffing, but his still seems to be one of the bigger ones. And his condescending flop signal can be a bit too much.

At the risk of offending ShockRef, ANY official who brings drama to a call is an impediment. Back in the day, there was a local ref, who upon finding a 'charge', would literally skip 3 steps and make a dramatic call. I find most refs don't do that, and I sense Higgins is a pretty good pro.

^ This -- but I would say he's much better now than, say, 10-15 years ago. He's definitely matured, and really is as good as any you could hope to get. I hope that professional growth, and not WSU's rise to prominence, is the reason my opinion of him has moderated.

I wish we could get much lower quality officials that are willing to take much less direction from Elgin. I'd rather have 3 guys that are completely outclassed, than have somebody on the crew that's "great" but actively working against us.

And frankly, if you don't think Janssen is blatantly working against WSU at this point, you need to go rewatch every WSU game he's officiated the last 3 years.

I don't think Higgins is that bad and actually find him to be quite fair, by fair I mean consistent either way bad or good on both ends. He's just recognizable and so a lot of people associate every bad call of a game he works has his bad call even if it wasn't his whistle. Personally, I don't know too many officials by name but I recognize them and have a good or bad thought before each game with that said give me Higgins any game over Gerry Pollard to me that guy is the worst at trying to interject himself into the game.
