This may be the SN's all-time most inane thread...ever.

Basically, picken' a fight over pick'em.

      I second the motion.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

Couldn't pay me to watch a valley game we aren't playing or give a squirt of piss for the outcome. Maybe JH4P and Kel feel similarly?

Apologies if my interest in gaining insight into the posters on Shockernet offends you. During my work career I discovered that my work performance and advancement improved as I better understood the personalities of my work colleagues whether they held superior or inferior positions to me in our workplace.

Q: How will JH4P likely die?

A: By falling into a "Well, actually."

Kidding aside - I love to read others thoughts on analytics. I don't really understand why some folks feel the need to encourage all of us to think the same. I don't really understand how "credibility" exists on a message board - when I'm drinking beer with my buddies and shooting the breeze about sports we don't ever feel the need to have any sort of measuring contest.

Maybe I'm just too old to understand the petty-internet-BS thing or twitter-feuds.

Seems like some of you are more concerned with putting people in their place than talking about BBall. But I'm not an internet alpha-male, just a regular Joe, so it's probably just me being lame.

Oh it doesn't offend me or probably anyone else if you want to spend your time that way.

My first point was that most people likely don't care enough to track another posters picks in order to determine the accuracy of their other posts throughout the forum.

My second point, and I probably did not make this clear, is how can you determine the effort that someone has put into their picks? Some may spend lots of time running the numbers and looking in depth at strengths and weaknesses while others may take a wild ass guess or just use what they know off the top of their head to make picks.

You can do with your time what you want and form opinions of your fellow posters by any method you choose. However, to start a thread for the express purpose of bashing fellow posters for not participating in a VOLUNTARY activity and implying that their non participation means they don't know what they're talking about is asinine.

Well one of the called-out parties is now an active participant in the thing, even though it's not his picks at all whatsoever.

I think with at least one of the posters it's about ego and it would be absolutely crushing to see analytics and numbers not winning the thing.

Why aren't they his picks? You've said he's only ever focused on stats. Do you believe he is the one running the calculations over at kenpom or doing the math? When he gives statistical analysis, it's almost always one of the big stat sites. You can't call him out about overly relying on stats and then criticize him when he says he'd use kenpom to make predictions.

Also, I know this sounds like a cop out, but the goal of a stat site is to beat averages. If WSU beats UNI 99/100 times, but your gut told you UNI was going to win and in the first minute of the game an asteroid wiped out our team causing us to forfeit, was your gut really right? Maybe, but the stat site was still the better prediction prior to the game. To win contests like this that have large pools, you really just want the statistics to be better than the average picker. The overall winner is always going to require some level of luck.

Does this mean we could get a luck rating for the Pick-em Contest? Someone get to work on this straight away.

KenPom literally does do a "luck" rating for all D1 teams. It's basically some sort of way to see if a team has mostly won, or mostly lost, the close games that could have gone the other way with a different bounce of the ball at a key moment.

WSU is currently ranked #245 in luck.

I'm aware of KenPom's luck rating. I want a Pick-em Contest luck rating.

I'm being 100% transparent that I'm merely copying KenPom's data. I've never claimed anything else. I'm not looking for personal credit, though I'd be happy if this experiment earned Ken some kudos. He deserves them.

Personally, I just wished I'd thought of this sooner. You seem to never tire of endless mockery of numbers and analytics, always claiming your eyes are superior. This is your chance to put up or shut up Fev.
