This is just my opinion. I don't have any in to Marshall's recruiting philospohy.

Marshall is unlikely to go after guys who are certain to make NBA rosters. Those guys are going to go to schools that are well-known as specializing in "one-and-done" players. I'm certain he will have his eyes and ears open if one of those types of players has an interest in WSU, but that won't be a priority in his recruiting.

Marshall is unlikely to go after guys who are convinced they are certain to make an NBA roster when they don't have that level of talent. Aspirations, yes. Delusions, no. It just doesn't work out well to tell some over-confident 16- or 17-year old guy that he's not as good as he thinks and he needs the kind of development Marshall could give him.

Guys who know they have a shot and want the best coaching in college to prepare them for that shot - those are going to be Marshall's targets. Those recruiting targets are going to be consistent with the great character and (typically) high BBIQ that Marshall has been recrtuiting. Hamilton may be an exception to the high BBIQ, but if he ever gets it - look out. Expect an occasional project from Marshall. He's always had a few.

Another thing. the guys who want to learn are coachable. That's always been a trait of Marshall's players and may be the reason some recruits haven't stayed with the program. I'm not saying any who transferred weren't coachable. That's something we will never know. It's something Marshall would know.
Agree. Marshall wants a program, and our program is better off with high caliber players interested in having a college career, ie not one year.

That being said, I think if a one and done player shows interest in WSU GM will surely make a call and gauge the liklihood, but his active recruiting time is not going to be spent jockeying for position with P5 schools for the 5* one and done players.

If Andrew Wiggins had the insight to come play with Nick for a year, 3G would've welcomed him with open arms. That being said, I agree, those aren't the kind of kids he wants his staff to spend the majority (or even minority) of their time recruiting.

IMO HC3G does not want his recruitment efforts to spend any time on "one and done" players. Marshall's goal is and should remain to build a pipeline of players that ensures the Shockers are a formidable MBB team year-in and year-out!

I think that career is the key word. Perry Ellis is an example of a 5* player that would have been an acceptable recruit. No one knew that he was a 4 yr. player when he came out of high school but most 4* and 5* players are not one and done. Character is something that GM strongly considers.

There are a lot of kids that fall in the category behind the "1 and done" and the 3 star or diamond in the rough, that we have recruited in the past. We have landed a few and have a few on our roster. 3G is getting to the point that he has to take less risks with recruiting than he did even 2-3 years ago. I don't expect his philosophy of recruiting high character kids to change, but I do expect (and I'm sure he expects) to further widen the gap with the talent we bring in vs the rest of the Valley.

Cle came to WSU as a two time juco all-American and didn't start his first few games. He's one of the best to play at wsu. Shaq was almost kicked off the team when left behind for a road game. This is always a thought of mine when I hear about Marshall taking a P5 gig. Will the AD and fan base tolerate the Marshall style? Not starting the star recruit unless he's earned it, and not because he's the star. Making him earn it. Can those schools handle Marshall not going after one and done talents? These are the reasons I love Marshall and his coaching style. Effort and fundamentals win him over, not hype.

It's not just a "hope" anymore through WSU, it's a realistic possibility.
I think getting guys in the NBA certainly helps recruiting, not sure it is enough to counter the league we play.

                  For in-college competition, nope.

But it does make it difficult for someone recruiting against WSU to say "you'll never be able to make the NBA if you go there, look at the league"

We recruited MM, Fred, and LS, all 4* with no NBAer's/All Americans to point to and our league hasn't changed.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Well Bill Self didn't start Diallo ever and there are plenty of other McDonald's All-Americans that either transferred because they wouldn't play his style or didn't start for awhile until they figured out the system.

If you're a coach that wins, you can do whatever you want with your lineups and how you treat your recruits in terms of playing time. I think most coaches would love getting a 4-year player like Perry Ellis or Tyler Hansbrough or a bunch of the Duke guys. But when someone like Andrew Wiggins, Ben Simmons or Anthony Davis says "I want to come to your school", you let them. I know HCGM would have loved to have Andrew Wiggins here. Other, younger players see that and think "Hey if a guy like Wiggins goes there maybe I should look at them too!". So it not only helps you that year, it helps you in the long run too.

But seeing Baker and Fred both make NBA rosters as undrafted rookies shows recruits (and players already on the roster) that, hey, you can do that too. Just play how 3G wants you to play and your style will win over NBA coaches.

Can anyone point to a player that Bill Self actually developed past their natural growth as players? Any where his coaching and influence actually made them better?

They had a power forward a few years ago that was Bog XII player of the year as a junior. I believe he was rated as a noardwlone top 100. Name escapes me.

I know we have some Jayhawk (in addition to Shockers) fans on here who defend Self. However, Self definitely didn't develop Oubre. The criticism of many on here who legitimately say that KU is a mostly underachieving, and silver spooned (rankings wise) basketball program are imo correct. They often are higher than they deserve and Self arrogantly rides the wave.
