So...hear me out...one of the themes I've seen of the basketball-related posts in this thread is that the team, and a couple of players in particular, don't look nearly as motivated as they'll need to be if the Shox want to remain successful.

Also, reading the first comment on the tweet about 3G's suspension tonight, it's clear that there are plenty of people out there who think we're done as a nationally-ranked program since Fred, Ron, and Evan left.

You have a coach that leads by example, and expects his leaders to do the same. Also, you have the opportunity to reinforce that in an exhibition a full two months before the start of official practices. In a situation where the worst thing that will happen is having to let one of your assistant coaches, who you have the utmost confidence in anyway, get some reps in the head coach position.

Seems to me that, embarrassing or not, Coach did what he thought he needed to set up success in the upcoming season. Especially given the fact that he already had one player with a concussion, the play was trending toward more players getting injured, and the scorekeeper had been lax in his duties multiple times (I'm remembering our reaction against the timekeeper in St. Louis just this last spring).

The episode was beneficial, gauging the last 7 minutes anyway, and hopefully will be going forward into the winter months. As much as I hate to admit it, ISU red & N. Iowa will be playing every bit as hard as these Canuck's have been the last several days. So will other Valley members.

The juxtaposition, for me at least, was remembering the days of R. Smithson berating the players, versus the refs, in a public spectrum. Now, that was embarrassing!! The results spoke for themselves. That doesn't mean I don't like Smithson.

Blow over by Monday? By December? That video clip will be on every opponent message board and all over social media for every game this season and probably next season. People seeing that clip won't see Nurger getting a concussion, or any other player getting "rugby hit", or anything else that WSU fans find as causes for the action. Those other people will only see Marshall fighting his way through assistant coaches and players trying to keep him away from a referee.

That's the way the world works any more. We never see what caused a reaction, we just see the reaction, because that fits nicely into time slots on TV and social media.

SportsCenter took programming time away from the Olympics to broadcast the negative aspects to the nation. Let that sink in just a bit. Marshall's outburst was considered more newsworthy than some aspects of the Olympics. They didn't televise any bad calls. The world has no clue about "protecting players", they just saw what looks like a temper tantrum from someone who has anger management issues. Did SC report that Marshall did that to fire up, inspire, or teach his players? Nope. They showed it for the knee jerk reaction of a college basketball coach acting like the manager of a professional baseball team.

You expect that type of reaction in MLB. You expect fights in hockey games. That's been part of those sports for a long time. there are different commonly accepted standards of behavior in different sports. Marshall's action was so surprising to see in a basketball game that it got national sports coverage. A similar outburst by a minor league baseball manager wouldn't even be reported by local media covering the game for the local paper.

I'll give you the fact that opposing fan message boards will save that clip. That's expected. Have we given up the Karate Kick gif yet? No .. that's what opposing fan bases do. Should we care? There was a game last year where Marshall had an extended close encounter with the refs at midcourt at half time. IIRC.
