Shox vs. McGill

Watched the replay, coach was heated about something and got his point across.
"Shock fever" being embarrassed is overboard. This was a passionate coach who yelled and wanted to make a point, he never raised a hand at an official.
Get over it. It does nothing to downgrade the university or team in ANY way.

I /was/ there and it somehow not seem near as bad from 40 feet away. There was a lot of weird stuff going on which did get one player injured and another down.. It was also very hot in the gym. Funny thing is that the mcgill fans started cheering the shocker players after coach was gone.

1) I'm sure HCGM was pissed about the call on ZB for the box out, but I would guess it was the rugby play after that, that caused the freak out.
2) I love Willis for having the cajones to try and hold coach back. He seemed to be the only one big enough to do it until coach told him to take a hike.
3) Isaac Brown deserves an apology and an all expense paid weekend on Coach.
4) Whatever you thought of HCGM before tonight, this just confirms it. It's like it's own Rorschach test..."Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should accomplish with your ability."

I just got a Bleacher Report message on my phone plastered across the screen:
"CBB Video: Wichita State HC Gregg Marshall goes after refs and is ejected from exhibition game; gets restrained by players"
Great publicity. Image doesn't matter.Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

Alright.
I'm sitting here in Montreal just finishing reading the thread and am entertained and annoyed at the same time that I had to read through 10 pages of posts wondering "why is nobody referencing what really got him kicked out"?
I didn't figure it out until I watched the replay link - thanks for whoever posted that.
I guess I was the only guy looking in that direction (I wasn't sitting with Shocker fans across from the bench) when it happened. So I'll give you what I'm 99 percent sure was the inflection point:
He kicked the scorer's table. Specifically, the video display. See below for more context.
Since the camera was still focused on the play you couldn't see it until after the T and ejection.
I'll have a full download and opinion from Canada after I get back, but I'll leave these comments for now after having witnessed that game in person:
1 - Yes it was a BS call, but GM wound up a massive kick for the video screen on the scorers table... And then held back.
2 - Which created the problem. It caught the attention of the trailing ref at mid court.
3 - Instead of scuffing his foot on the ground or punching an assistant (joke), he did a light kick that glanced off the video screen instead. Trailing ref is all over it.
4 - As soon as he does this, I think "that's number 2, he's gonna get tossed". I was right.
5 - Personal opinion... I would have T'd him too. And thrown him out if it was a mandatory second. In my personal opinion - but I will leave it to ShockRef and the other experts - it felt like that was just overkill.
7 - My gut feel which I reserve the right to change is that Gregg is used to operating without one technical foul and refs that know/respect him. I think he decided to test the waters - I hope because he's a diabolical genius - and it backfired because both of those familiar dynamics were absent.
And finally...
I really do like the vast majority of posters so I don't want to alienate anybody, but:
8 - I'm willing to cut some slack since I watched the Carleton game online and understand the gap between onscreen and in person, but those posters saying the game was "unsafe" or "unbalanced" are out of their got dam minds. I've played and watched a lot of basketball, and McGill's players are WAY cleaner and more respectful than what we get year in year out from most Valley teams.
9 - That said, the refs didn't knock my socks off - especially on at least 3 occasions where I turned to a fellow Shocker fan and said "terrible call but I will take it". Rauno's injury happened because of the way he played the break, and a little bad luck, but I didn't seem a single dirty play the whole time. Just good physical basketball with some questionable calls on both sides.
So much for my brief message.

Coach played the fool. I found it humorous, but not something I condone. GGG has always been a surly bastard and this is just another confirmation. As far as the players go, they are going to be fine. I'm glad we are getting the extra reps.Wichita State, home of the All-Americans.

This game was obviously allowed to get too physically lopsided in favor of one team. Instead of melting down, the coaches should have called timeout, gathered the team, and then calmly walked off the court. That's how you protest bush-league play and officiating.
I agree with those who feel Marshall went too far in his tirade. If I'm our AD, I suspend him for the first exhibition game and be done with it. That said, it reminds me of the time Dana Altman went berserk at the end of an NIT game while he was coaching Creighton. He was ready to rumble with a ref. Unfortunately, I can't find video of it. But he was running around the court like a mad man looking for an official.
