"In separate interviews on his show Tuesday, WFAN’s Mike Francesa talked with two head coaches who are headed to the NCAA tournament and another who hopes his team will defy the odds and make it there.

Gregg Marshall’s Wichita State Shockers will play in the Big Dance for the sixth consecutive year after beating Illinois State 71-51 Sunday to win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Marshall said he has been somewhat surprised by this year’s squad, which is 30-4 and ranked 20th in the nation.

“I’ve got to tell you, Mike, when I lost those two NBA guards (Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet) … there was some apprehension. We were nervous,” he said.

“Our team has blossomed. … We gave that ball to (freshman point guard) Landry Shamet. He’s a guy that you’ve got to see play because he will eventually play in the association (NBA).”"
Great interview with 3G. I think he is higher on this team than we even think he is. Expecting big things in the dance. And we have the same team next year with a couple upgrades? WOW!

I was hoping BYU made the final so I could see how Gonzaga would respond against the team that just beat them at home.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

      • Landry's gonna be on SI's March Madness cover. How cool is that for a freshman. Also, Tevin Glass will represent ETSU.

        • Has anyone seen the video from Sunday where Coach Marshall invited the fan (sits on the floor behind the bench for years, Eagle did an article on him last year I think. I should know his name but I can't grasp it EDIT pretty sure it's Darren Thomas) down to the floor, picked him up and lifted him over the railing, and then walked with him to the lockerroom where he had his picture taken with the trophy?

Things like that, his complete giving to someone that GREGG knows loves Shocker basketball, his understanding of the passion of the fans and his love and desire to share those experiences, magnified when it's someone perhaps less fortunate, his drive to be successful and demand excellence and hold them accountable with expectations.

I don't care who doesn't like him. They don't know him. Is he arrogant? He freaking great at what he does. if I was HALF as good at ANYTHING as he is at being a coach, I'd be unbearably arrogant. He's an incredible giving person, he's done more for our University and this city than just about any human and he's a perfect fit and belongs here as long as he coaches.

I'm fully cognizant of the resources it takes to pay his massive and 100% deserving salary and who in this city is capable of funding it.

DOUBLE IT. NOW. Make it impossible for anyone to come get him. I don't care what you pay him. Right now he's even more valuable than that.

          • Gregg knows PR and is Wichita's greatest Ambassador. There is no negative PR and when the "negative" publicity strikes on a national basis, recruits see Wichita State and never has that kind of publicity been the kind of player lawlessness (so far)that would turn players and parents away. The "chip on his shoulder" Tiff he got into with ESPN during the Final 4 was good publicity.

Yep, but they sure despise him up in Lawrence!

Exactly what we want -- they probably have no problem at all with Bruce Weber, nor would they object to Kim Anderson if they still bothered to play Mizzou.

They hate him for being able to win with a clean program.

It was so sweet. He goes around trying to make people think that he's stern, but I think he's really a softy.

                          • OK. Thanks for the print and including us in this "10 Hottest Teams".

However, "Outlook: Gregg Marshall and the Shockers don’t have to sweat on Selection Sunday thanks to a dominant performance in the Missouri Valley Conference title game against Illinois State. The same can’t be said for whoever draws Wichita State in the field, since the team’s RPI rating could end up placing this white-hot team as a double-digit seed. Throw in Marshall’s experience in this position and you have to consider Wichita State among the most dangerous teams in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.*

Ummm....if your talking just about this team's RPI rating and nothing else, in what world does a 29 rating equate to double-digits.

It's just amazing how some of these people look and see things. RPI's are twisted and distorted so badly that it's hard to keep things straight. But yah, that math doesn't translate very well.
