Thought this was a well-written and pretty accurate depiction of our week in Atlantis.
Yep. I don't take issue with anything Davis writes here. It goes without saying that I was hoping for a much different outcome last week but I didn't think we'd get past Louisville and was pretty sure Michigan State was going to win the whole thing. And I certainly didn't think Baylor was going to play like they did. But as Seth writes, this is a good time to learn a few things about your team.

In the Gregg Marshall era, Wichita State has been nearly unbeatable at home.

"Charles Koch Arena doesn’t normally top the ever-popular “Toughest places to play” lists of Division I arenas. But in reality, the Wichita State Shockers have been almost unbeatable there over the last few years. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, Wichita State is 81-4 at home, good for a .953 winning percentage...."

Not sure I have ever heard anyone describe Koch Arena as being rather dimly lit but maybe I am just use to it.

I have never noticed it either. Sounds like an excuse -- "Sorry, Coach. We could only make nine points in a half, because it's hard to hold the flashlight in one hand while shooting with the other."

I guess they must say CKA is only half-lit because it didn't bother them. Too much in the second hald

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

                • Maybe this is him. Some high school kid who probably never set foot in CKA.

I took someone to the exhibition game that hadn’t been in Koch Arena for a couple of years; the first comment he made was how bright it was. In fairness, he’s a K-Stater (KU-Hater) and is used to the ‘Octagon of Gloom’.

On television, our black seats, etc. may show up as a darker background. I've never thought about it either.

Everything looks dim when you forget to take your sunglasses oiff. But you sure look cool.

                        • Perhaps it's merely a case of the author of the article being dimly lit.

When I read that, this is what I immediately gravitated to. I haven't been in Koch for a game in decades so my only experience now is via TV and it does appear as a "dark" atmosphere. I didn't really take issue with the statement and actually appreciated the viewpoint about the unique design and how it "isn’t your typical sports stadium" and that the design contributes to the overall loudness of the environment.

Personally, that's one of the reasons I'd hate to see them try to raise the roof to increase capacity and skyboxes. I get the need for skyboxes and there's probably a way to do that without screwing up the "atmosphere" (Love what they did with Arrowhead and it remains the NFL's loudest stadium) but the extra capacity would be wasted. I mean, look at the empty seats in CKA this year alone. This is a freaking awesome college basketball teams and each game day we're discussing the lack of fans in the seats. Imagine an additional 2k or 4k available seats.

Although, adding skyboxes without increasing the seating could be a net positive. It could move corporate donors and high rollers up top into swanky accommodations, opening lower level seats up to people who would use them.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

                              • Good point, steele. Keep the existing seats or maybe add a few more (the Intrust crowds suggest that there's a potential market of more than 10,500 in town, some of whom aren't CKA season ticketholders -- although probably not for Southern Nazarene); add skyboxes; and let people who actually want to come to the games bid on the seats now held by the skybox crowd.

There should be fewer obvious blank spots (no one will see into the skyboxes to judge how full they are), and the big money dilettantes won't need to tell the people in front of them to sit down, because they'll be safely up out of the way. It's a win all around.
