I think the band should include the students. I think the musicians are very talented and tight sounding. What I don’t understand about the band is why they play ancient/dated songs. I do not know if it is licensing or what, but our band plays songs from the 80’s and before. The 80’s!!!!! Each year it is the same songs over and over again. It is not a pep band to me or the shocker fans I associate with. It is just a band that sounds good. At away games, even though the bands are not as talented as ours, they energize the crowd more by playing newer songs. The Drake band brings better musical energy to the crowd than our band.

Interestingly, I find the band to be too loud. I know I'm in the minority, but I'd be good with it being a bit smaller/cheaper.

I'm not a big fan of SGA cutting the band and expecting someone else to pay for it. Why did they want to cut it. I guess I'd like to hear the logic.

My favorite instrument. I loved the post game trumpet solos of yester year.

        It was great brass.

For the students and by the students. It is a student thing.

Alums can sit in with permission, which is usually granted freely.

I also like 80's music, but not for a pep band. It's 2016! I would appreciate a song from this century. The songs are older than the students!

So each year part of our budget is for new music, but it is a very limited in part due to the nature of the budget. The music added is usually at the discretion of the directors in charge(aka Grad students). We've tried multiple times to add new songs in, but we can usually only afford a couple of songs a year. When you add songs, you must also then remove songs, which many are beloved by some of the alumni. We've removed songs before and gotten complaints so we try to keeps SOME of the same old songs. In addition, the songs that we've tried to add usually don't fly either with the crowd or with the band itself. There's a style and precedent to everything and we are walking a fine line trying to maintain that while also being "up to date".

Does modern music translate to brass that well?

Safe to ditch the Janet Jackson. Keep Lucretia McEvil and Frankenstein. What is the legality of transcribing and arranging? You are music majors after all. Doesn't the University have blanket ASCAP, etc?
