  • Attention National Media on GM

Before it all gets started, I just want to remind the national media.

This run didn't start with Fred and Ron. To be honest, they are the 3rd generation to take the reigns.

The first generation was Murry, Kyles, Stutz.

2nd generation (and leaders on final 4 run) was Armstud, Early and Hall.

3rd generation is now. FVV, Wessel, Cotton, Baker.

I've already heard it hinted that it's all done after this year....

Why? Why are the players in the pipeline at WSU not going to be as good as Baker and FVV. Why are we gonna take a step back?

    I'll hang up and listen.

I always laugh when KU fans try to tell me that Marshall has never been to the NCAA tourney without Baker and Van Vleet

From an outsider's perspective, it would seem that a bit of a drop off would be expected, because the biggest loss on the team is one of the greatest point guards in MVC history. That's hard to replace, and would seem to automatically make life more difficult for next year's team.

However, as you pointed out, Marshall has done well replacing the "irreplaceable." I, for one, do not expect to see WSU head for the abyss. But I will be very interested in who GM brings in and how the team changes next year. He's already proven he's one of the best coaches in the country. I expect he will continue the tradition of excellence he's created. It's culture now...he's built a program, not a team...

I was watching the CBSSports channel post game and one of the talking heads was saying pretty much what you just said. He was raving about McDuffie and how he's a top 100 recruit from NJ and those guys don't typically go play in the MVC - unless they go to WSU. He was saying that the run isn't over because the recruits are getting better due to the success of the final four run, etc. He was really high on our young guys. I am too. I'm not too concerned with next year. Right now Im just happy that I get to watch these guys play a good team on Saturday.

Maybe I should say KC media, then.

Here's a great example of what the national media does not know about Wichita State. I have a good friend, who grew up in the Springfield, Illinois area, lived there until about 30 years ago and now calls Houston home (and is rooting for the Shockers during the tourney). He still has a lot of family in Springfield. We were texting after last night's game and I mentioned Payton Allen. His response was 'if this is the guy I'm thinking about, he is a very good player.'

Most of the P5 douches aren't even aware of Payton. He averaged 5 ppg and played 10+ mpg for a very good Texas A&M team last year.

Most of the P5 douches don't know about Landry Shamet, who was a top 100 player that Marshall thought was even better than MM coming in.

HCGM's biggest challenge next year will be to find an adequate PG, but he recruited one, so it will be interesting to see if Frankamp or our Juco transfer will get the keys at the start of the season next year. Either way, we will be tough at the end of the year.

I was as surprised as you. Wish I remembered who it was or could find it. I'm having a hard time believing it was real.

I think it's funny that the only player on the roster after this season mentioned as "top 100" by the media generally is MM. Due diligence just isn't a thing with the media these days.

It's going to be an eye opening experience for a lot of people when we win the battle for Atlantis in November....

I don't think that the Shocks will be falling off a cliff next year, but after watching Fred and Ron perform against Vandy and Arizona I have to believe we will take somewhat of step backward next year before moving forward. Those dudes simply will not be very easily replaced.

The Shocks will be pretty much faced with creating a whole new team dynamic in terms of leadership and roles and that creates a lot of uncertainty. Fred, Ron and Evan have provided great leadership and Fred and Ron in particular have been a tremendous security blanket for 3G and their younger teammates. Would Shaq Morris even be on this Shocker team today if it wasn't for Fred? Who knows.

It will be a lot of fun watching how this next generation of Shockers will develop and carry on the legacy of the past 6 years but IMHO there are bound to be some growing pains. What we do have going for us 3G's track record of developing players and teams to be the best that they can be and, with time and patience, I think this next generation of Shockers will be pretty good.

Yes, the SRs are all going to be hard to replace. But the cupboard is fully stocked. McDuffie is getting valuable experience, and looking like he belongs in doing so. Connor has seriously impressed me with everything except his shooting, but I think that will change. ZBrown will defend. Shamet by all accounts is going to be a nice player. Shaq and Rauno are all of a sudden a nice duo down low....I could keep going but my point is this. Will WSU take a step back? Yes. I don't think we will be discussing a potential national championship in November. However I don't really see anyone in the MVC ready to step up and take the league from WSU. So the 'step back' is all relative.

Just a guess, but I bet we see 24-25 wins yet again next year. And if 24 wins is a step back.... we are living well.

These asshats Ive heard are all talking under the context that Marshall needs to bail now because its all over after this year.

Im not saying we are final 4 bound.

But im not saying we wont, either.

The thing is, this is the 3rd major generation moving on, and why now, is it all ending? Why is MM, Shamet, Morris and Frankcamp not going to be the next generation to pick up the mantle and carry on?

Just another display of ignorance that we always hear.

Why shouldn't Motta move on? He isnt in the tournament? Why shouldnt Alford move on to another program?

Oh, because, well, uh. Because. Ya know...

                          That's what I thought.

Shamet and McDuff will be the next generation, and it's going to be a good one.
