Maybe we should fire Marshall and hire mike Cohen back because he's not arrogant

          Pro,
Completely agree with all thoughts. Particularly #5.
MT really missed TB when he left for greener pastures. HCGM misses the influence and advice CJ provided and hopefully will soon be providing again.

          That is all.
Above all, make the right call.

I knew you had some humor in you. That was a good comeback. I like that side of you much better than Igor Grumpenstein.

I think maybe the genius ref would like that.

Bottom line...Coach Marshall and Doug "particapatory ribbons" Elgin will never be buddies. We all know that. Yes coach has an ego. He BETTER!!! He coaches at my favorite university. ShockRef goes back to the dawn of ShockerNet with me and about 5 other guys. You don't think he knows his ****...??? Come on!!!

This St. Louis weekend was the same ole Elgin classic. He's the commish for God's sake. Of course he wants multiple bids. Our coach hates this league and is not on the same wavelength of sharing wins. He wants to WIN for us, his players and himself. A winner!!!

If he shows or showed some dissatisfaction in St. Elgin this week...then so be it. Competitive juices at its finest. Marshall is too big for the Missouri Valley Conference. He's already made payday with a great coaching career at Wichita. Time for the university or "gulp" Coach Marshall to move on.

I have thought this many times this year. CJ saw/sees the game well and I don't think he was ever afraid to disagree with HCGM in the heat of battle. I don't think coach liked being second-guessed but he did take it under consideration and it made us better.

As much as I love Coach Marshall I have to agree with ShockRef. Coach's behavior leaves a lot to be desired at times. ProShox is right on with his analysis as well.

At the end of the day... Fred and Ron are Gregg's day one n!gg@$... Connor just showed up... Pretty obvious he's a round peg trying to be fitted into a square hole... Hopefully we have the ingredients in the cupboard and our chef can just create a tweak in his recipe... Go Shox

Marshall is a fiery guy and competitive as they come, and he isn't cowed by authority. He sticks up for his players. That may not always be the most diplomatic approach, and I can certainly see circumstances under which it can work against him, which may have happened this weekend and is something he should try to restrain in his (and his team's) own best interests. But if that's the price of his temperament I'm willing to pay it and hope for the best in terms of restraint, because the whole package is worth it.

As for Elgin, I wasn't there, but the reports I saw were that Elgin was gesturing at Marshall as he complained about some pretty inexplicable calls and decisions against his team. Did you see it that way, Ref? That's an honest question. But I also have an honest follow-up, which is this: is it possible this could also be one of those classic cases of a ref seeing the second guy in the confrontation and missing the first? Because if Elgin was intervening in a live disagreement between Marshall and whoever was working the game in some capacity, I'd argue that Elgin was the one who was out of line and unprofessional, for intruding on the action. That's high school-level micromanagement and something that should have been handled privately after the game.

The description you gave, including your comments about the interaction between Elgin and Watkins, is an indictment of the weakness and pettiness of the Valley of Even's leadership, such as it is, far more than it is of Marshall; and it's just one more reason to get the hell out of this bush league and escape its limitations as soon as possible. I do agree with you that 3G could use someone like himself on the sideline as a foil, however, and that the absence of Chris Jans from gametime coaching is a handicap to both him and the program that I'd love to see remedied somehow.

My observations of the game were very similar to SR. Could not figure out why WW was allowed the same avenue time and time again to the basket with no change of personnel or tactics. If a frontal assault isn't working perhaps it time for an envelopment. Reminded me of MT and his refusal to play zone more in games. Felt UNI made the adjustment at half but we did not adjust to their half time new game plan. I remarked to a good friend that they missed CJ and his in game adjustments and his help to HCGM. HCGM gets outcoached very seldom but I think HCBJ was the winner in this match up because he really never had to counter late game adjustments because there were none. Would I want any other coach or staff to lead our Shockers....No because I don't think there is anyone that is better at what he does. Does that mean he is perfect.....No. The game is played by young men against other young men and none of them are perfect either. I won't let a couple of games at the end of the season lessen what they accomplished this year or what all of them have done over the last 8 years. Just an aside, the friend of mine that flew in from Houston was beside the UNI student section and after the game he remarked that he did not understand why WW was allowed to continue doing the same thing over and over each time down court with no adjustment and as stated above I had no answer for him.

Very interesting topic. I like Gregg a lot, but I can see value in Ref's assessment...on some levels. I always think it is MUCH easier to do the coaches' job when
you are not the coach. BUT Gregg is not infallible, does not always do the right thing and is somewhat of a conflicting personality...but he wins...always has.

I'm pretty sure he will not be looking here for advice, however. Best we stick to our day jobs.:)
