We are playing a team Monday that has a very good inside "player. The phantom elbow that Shaq threw never connected but the Panther was reeling like Sonny Liston being hit by the "Louisville Lip". Lot's of UNI flopping today including the blocking foul on Washpun that was called charging on FVV. Again, a great acting job that the stripes rewarded them on. That would have been 4 on Washpun but instead was a dagger mistaken call that hurt us as much as all the the hacks not called when we were penetrating and and getting mugged. How about the Panther throwing Wessel's leg's off him in aggressive fashion? No call? The Panther bench players came through for them today.

Now back to Shaq. We are at our best with him in the game. Each game, he gets around 2 fouls about 30' or more away from the basket or ill-advised ones that hurt. Today, I truly thought we would exploit them inside, but no such luck. When we miss shots like today, not getting much inside sticks out like a sore thumb. Has Shaq fouled out much? Maybe even if he has 3 fouls, we may have to roll the dice and keep him in there and hope for the best? Dunno, because I have never made on thin dime coaching.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Today, he tried passing it and still got called for the charge (before the terrible charge call when Washpun was sliding into position). I think he needs to stop driving for a bit. It will keep him from getting hurt and help us on offense.

In the tournament, I think those calls will start going our way, and I won't get nearly as nervous when he drives.
If Fred stops driving to the hoop we'll be an even more one dimensional 3 ball team, and how's that working for us?

      • I think some people forget that Ron didn't really have a stellar shooting year last year either. He was streaky. He did shoot 43% for the year but he wasn't consistent from game to game. I had really thought that this year would be his year (especially after the PanAm games). FVV has had a few dominant games this year--but, on the whole, I don't think either Senior is having the year they thought it might be. I'm sure it's as disappointing for them as it is for the fans--actually, certainly more.

You might be right, but it sure seems like if you add up misses with no foul + turnovers because a charge gets called, his driving as of late has been more unsuccessful than successful.

I'd like to see ZB and MM try to drive for a few games.

I'd also love to see ZB and MM attack the basket more.

              • Fred is the only guy on our team that can drive to the bucket, that's a big problem. When Fred isn't getting the calls, we have no Plan B to get the ball into the lane. I'm concerned about going on the road against Indy State and also the rematch against Ill State. Both teams can beat us and will beat us if we don't get it figured out.

                • Van Vleet's Sophomore Year:
                  FG%: 48% - FT%: 83% - 3P%: 41%
                  Van Vleets's Senior Year:
                  FG%: 40% - FT%: 81% - 3P%: 42%

                  Ron Baker's Sophomore Year:
                  FG%: 45% - FT%: 84% - 3P%: 38%
                  Ron Baker's Senior Year:
                  FG%: 43% - FT%: 79% - 3P%: 37%

Now I absolutely love both guys, but this is not the progression I was expecting from them. Until they step up offensively, the Shox will continue to struggle scoring against good teams.

I know why... because unlike half the other guards that get calls in college basketball, he stays under control and uses his craftiness to score and create plays.

With these new rules, the refs only favor those point guards that fly uncontrollably forward and pray for a foul. Demetric Williams would be an all-american under the new forward motion rulings.

                      The biggest difference: Cleanthony Early.

Fred got called for a charge when he did that too.

Progression? I think it is unreasonable to expect much more. Nobody shoots 100%; these numbers are pretty good!
