  • MSU Athletics Hurting Financially

Probably not anything anyone did not already know in general but interesting to see the Springfield News-Leader writing a piece focused on that.

    http://www.news-leader.com/story/sports/college/msu/2016/01/19/bears-losing-fans-leaving-athletics-budget-has-reached-tipping-point/78687234/

Lusk was given a five-year contract extension before last season, with a buyout equal to the full remaining salary. So if the school decided to go in another direction – and there's no indication that's the case – Lusk would be owed more than $1.1 million. With the looming revenue shortfall, doubling it doesn't appear likely.
One poster on the MSU message board claims they have already raised the money to buy Lusk out at the end of this year. I guess we will see.

Probably wrong forum, but interesting story.

Definitely makes it tougher to attract -- and keep -- a promising hoops coach. A guy like Cuonzo Martin was never long for Springfield. Also a reminder of how fortunate we are to have the level of commitment both within WSU and in the community that Shocker basketball enjoys.

I thought about putting it in to the Around the NCAA forum. Probably should have.

Reason #963 on the list of reasons that WSU needs to get out of this terrible, no good conference.

With a little luck and a lot of hard work, maybe Wichita State can work with the Bears and ride SMS's coattails to the Sun Belt. Casey has all the details.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Yes, I am quite sure that this news increases the Bear's profile and makes them an even more attractive candidate to the SBC.

BTW, can't they sell more cattle to get out of this financial crisis?

There could be a Major League style plot going on now. If Lusk makes attendance bad enough, they can't afford to fire him.

BTW #2 - that's my theory on why the crowd was not exuberant at the last home game. How excited can a person get about another drubbing of a Missouri Valley Conference opponent?

It's somewhat relevant to the Shockers as it's about the Valley and it wouldn't have gotten the looks in the other forum.

It is odd the expected shortfall is $1.1 million, the same as Lusk's buyout.

Anyone else notice how their declining ticket sales coincide with the moronic "not a state" promotions?

The Big 10 has mandated that their members no longer schedule FCS opponents plus they must play at least 1 non-con game against another P-5 school. If the mandates against scheduling FCS schools spreads to other BCS conferences then another source of revenue for MSU and other FCS schools could be diminished if not altogether dry up. I have no idea of what the prospects are for that happening.

I'm sure KU and KSU would like to continue at least one FCS opponent every year and perhaps would not like it if the Big 12 instituted such a mandate. West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorson said WVU will not longer schedule FCS teams after 2016 and he thinks that should be instituted across the board.

There have to be some exceptions to the no FCS rule. I can't find anyone listing them but it would be insane if they wouldn't allow a game against Villanova just because of their football conference.

Are you talking about sports other than football? The mandates that the Big 10 is implementing and that Horgorsen is proposing is football only.
