WSU Versus Southern Illinois Predictions and Pregame Discussions
Why are there are a lot of folks concerned about this game or predicting a close one? SIU and their 281 SOS is a joke. They lost to a 3 - 12 SIU Edwardsville at home for Pete's sake!
There is no team in this conference even close to our talent and capable of beating us. NO ONE and it's not even close. Don't tell me how Evansville was good and made it close. That's a bunch of crap. They got close because our guys failed to show up. There's going to be games where we are our own worst enemy - that's it. Not afraid of NIU and their wins against UNC and Iowa St. They only won those games for the same reason we lost to Bama, Iowa and USC. UNC was missing Marcus Paige and Iowa State was missing Naz Long.
If we got people thinking SIU is a single digit win, then what are you going to predict when we make the NCAA's and play a Villanova for instance? We'll get beat by 20? We should go undefeated in this conference and if we lose a game or two, it's because the boys failed to play up to their capabilities or some key player got hurt. The Shox control their own destiny and I predict a 17 point win against the posers from Carbondale.
I don't know what to think about this game. I originally thought it might be a good game due to SIU beating UNI, but now it just appear that UNI doesn't know how to play on the road ... or at all. They haven't looked good since before Hawaii. I think if we contain Beane, we win by 10-15. If we let him have his way, it could be a long night.
Who is making the trip? The wife and I will be there. Our seats are behind the Shocker bench but upper level unfortunately. Hoping for a great atmosphere though with 1st place in the valley up for grabs.
Will be our first time in Carbondale - any recommendations for dining or other places to check out from those that have been before?
Looking forward to our annual WSU road game. We are in section 103 row 8. We are staying @ the Holiday Inn Conference Center. Ms Atl, son & daughter are joining us

The curse is here. KCShox not only picks WSU, but says some decent things about the Shox.
"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

A physician called into a radio show and said: "That's the definition of a stool sample."

Have you ever spoken to a mental professional about multiple personality disorder? Perhaps even bipolar disorder.

Oh crap. The last time you picked us to win was Seton Hall. I no longer like our chances in this game.

So if we lose are you gonna flip the script and throw in the towel?
You seriously do have mental issues though.
Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

I'm not here to troll, so don't worry about that. I just wanted to talk about this game.
It looks like you guys are finally more or less healthy, so it wouldn't surprise me to see WSU run the table in the Valley this year. Just a few quick points:
(1) We are not better than E-ville.
(2) We've got nothing to stop your big boys.
(3) For SIU to have a chance, Beane is going to need a couple of other guys to step up big-time; otherwise it will be easy enough to stop Beane by simply double-teaming him.
(4) SIU does have a decent point guard, a solid JUCO pickup who's made a world of difference. Another JUCO guard who has contributed is Leo Vincent. RS frosh Armon Fletcher can also contribute. The other guys you've seen before, but O'Brien has stepped up his game a bit this year and the whole team has more confidence than we've seen in many years in Carbondale.
(5) Someone mentioned the Dawg Pound. The misery of the past six years has pretty much killed off the Dawg Pound, I'm sad to say. And even if it were still around, the students aren't back yet, so it wouldn't be in full force anyway. The Arena will be packed, however--looks like a sellout.

If you keep up that kind of discussion, you might be forced to become a regular here. I always enjoy reading about the opposition.
I hope Southern Illinois can continue to succeed (other than against us, of course). It was basically impossible for WSU to win in Carbondale for so long. Those mid-2000s teams were so tough and physical. I hated them but respected the heck out of them too. I am still mad that KU needed horrible officiating to get past Tatum, Faulker, and crew back in 2007. What I noticed is that Southern Illinois started to get more talented players (Kevin Dillard comes to mind), but those players weren't the tough, nasty, gritty players that made Southern Illinois so great. Barry appears to be turning it in the right direction, so I hope it continues. I like Barry. Good dude!
As for Saturday, I hope your prediction is correct. Beane is certainly a tough draw, but I hope WSU's depth can prevail.

So how is everyone feeling about Barry? Past sins forgiven?
Key stretch starting Saturday at SIU. We have 3 of the next 4 on the road. At SIU, at MSU, vs INS and at UNI. The Shocks will be in great position if they can successfully navigate those 4 games and run our Valley record to 7-0 with road wins at SIU and UNI in addition to the tough home win over Evansville.
1st things 1st. I will take a win in any way, any shape, any form and by any amount Saturday.
I think Anthony Beane (6-2, 178 Sr) is a terrific player and can really score (21.0 ppg). I think Beane has been helped by the addition of Juco transfer Mike Rodriquez (5-10, 160 Jr) at the point.
That said I think the Shocks are as capable of dealing with these guys as much as anyone can. I would think Ron (6-4, 210 Sr) and Zach1 (6-6, 216 So) are capable of keeping Beane under control. Beane seems to be pure scorer and doesn't generally look to distribute the ball (which is understandable) as he has only made 24 assists in 16 games (vs 35 turnovers).
Rodriguez OTOH is averaging 3.75 assists per game (vs 1.44 turnovers for a very decent 2.6 A/T ratio). However, Fred (6-0, 186 Sr) and Conner (6-1, 175 So) will actually have a slight size advantage in this match up which is not a regular occurrence.
Another Juco transfer, Leo Vincent (6-1, 179, Jr) appears to provide backup to both Beane and Rodgiquez when they need a rest.
At the 3 SIU starts Tyler Smithpeters (6-4, 179 Jr) who can knock down the 3-ball if you leave him open as he is hitting 48.2% from behind the arc and is SIU's best FT shooter at 85.2%. His backup appears to be Armon Fletcher (6-4, 182 RFr). However, Fletcher's is only hitting 28% of his treys and 52% of his FT's. Markis (6-8, 185, Fr) would seem like an ideal match up for these guys. Ron and Zach1 (and maybe Evan and Rashard if needed) could spend some times effectively defending these guys as well.
Sean O'Brien (6-7, 215 Jr) starts at the 4 and is having a solid season (12.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg). O'Brien will generally not stretch the floor on you as he is only 2-19 behind the arc. Evan gives up 3 inches but not any weight and should be able hold his own defensively with O'Brien. It looks like O'Brien is probably backed up by Austin Weiher (6-8, 200 RFr). Rashard Kelly (6-7, 225 So) should also be able to hold his own against these guys.
Bola Olaniyan (6-7, 220 Jr) will start at the 5 for SIU. He doesn't score a lot but he does lead SIU with 8.5 rebounds per game. Looks like he is backed up primarily by Ibby Djimde (6-7, 250 Sr) plus we might see Deng Leek (7-0, 225 Sr) for a few minutes as well. The matchups with Anton (6-8, 230 Sr), Shaq (6-8, 260 RSo) and Bush (6-11, 235 Sr) seem to me to be somewhat favorable for the Shocks.
I do expect a pretty rabid, sell-out, Maroon-out crowd for the Shocks to deal with. I have a feeling that 3G will have our guys in the right frame of mind.
