  • What was the negative for Alabama in calling the timeout? They used a timeout to gain 10 seconds. To me, that's a fairly big price to pay.

We're all in agreement on this. It's totally ridiculous. A media timeout doesn't reset the count, but the offensive team calling a timeout does? What kinda crap is that? FU NCAA, you pieces of garbage.

Next, in this game we started out 1-9 from the field as so yesterday. As yesterday, MM came in and gave us a big boost scoring and rebounding. Taylor did not have any turnovers and 6 assists which was nice. Credit Alabama for defending Baker far better than USC did yesterday. We are getting on the offensive boards which is nice but shooting around 31% from the field in this tourney and today we got rang up for lots more fouls than Alabama did.

Sunday a.m. at 9 we will play either Iowa or Notre Dame. Whomever it is will also be wanting to walk away with a win at this Tourney. It has been along time since we have lost 2 in a row and we will right this ship and win the next one, come home, get healthy, and start winning the way we are very capable and able to do.
Haven't seen the shot chart, but the really disappointing aspect is the lack of 2nd chance points, missing gimmies underneath. We've got to finish around the rim.

        • sucks that we couldnt close these last two games out...because deep down inside..biased aside...i think we were the best team in both contest

              • Or, to put it another way, come March, I won't be afraid to face either team again!

We didn't miss many gimmies inside / we didn't take many gimmies inside. On our offensive rebounds we passed back out for another jumper. Pretty much everything we took was a jumper, which is why our offense didn't do well despite a ton of shots. Jump shots don't get called for fouls and even the best players only make around 50%. When we are shooting 20-30%, I'd rather shoot 0-100 from 2FT. With enough arm flailing you'll still end up with far more points per possession. If you look back at Alabama's offense, you'll see that they only really did two things: flail to the rim, and push in transition. Still better a better strategy than pass on the 3PT line and hope the last second jump shot goes in with the way refs in college basketball are.

We missed PLENTY of shots underneath. We don't square up to the basket and go up strong (this was common yesterday and today). Get the ball, go up strong--not sideways or trying to loop the ball in.

Just a quick (albeit difficult to interpret) perusal of CBS shot chart shows 6/16 around the rim and 0/2 inside the FT line, making us 6/18; compare to Bama's 8/13; 9/14 comparison, and not only does it look like we missed quite a few close in, but we were thoroughly beaten in that area by Bama. Ouch.

According to the play by play, we shot 10 layups and 51 jumpers (30 3PT jumpers, 21 2PT jumpers). We missed 6 layups, 16 2PT jumpers, and 20 3PT jumpers. 40% from layups, 24% from 2PT jumpers, 33.3% from 3PT jumpers. The big problem is that we took 51 jump shots and made less than a third of them. A full third of our possessions ended in a 2PT jump shot, which ended up being worth about .48 points per possesssion. Empty trips down the floor. The sixth of our possessions that were worth .8 points per possession were still bad, but they weren't the problem.

That's one way to look at it. Another, perhaps, is to say 40% is terrible on layups; 80% should be a minimum. 24% is terrible inside the paint (although from both your analysis and mine, inside the paint is hard to define from their shot analysis graphics); 40% should be average. So, make two more layups, tie game. Make ONE more in the paint, we win. Shooting close in is a problem.
