Get used to it cause the powers in charge are dead serious about cleaning up all the grabbing and holding. It is here to stay.

The mantra is reduce physicality to increase freedom of movement.

    That is all.
Above all, make the right call.

    • Like 2 years ago? Cause it was serious then, too.

      • On the flip side, we can bull rush the lane with the best of them. Fred will make a living shooting free throws.

        • Increased freedom of movement will put a premium on rim kissing athletic types.

I wouldn't think for a second that Marshall wasn't already out in front of that issue when he did his recruiting of this ridiculously athletic team.

There's a difference between grabbing and holding and playing actual defense. It sounds like the NCAA wants to eliminate both.

Why does the offensive player get every benefit of the doubt? Why even try to play defense if you try you automatically get rang up with a foul? It might just be safer to just let the offensive player go in for an uncontested layup. It's already hard enough trying to play defense without fouling at this level. Let's just make it 50 times harder.

                Talk about unwatchable.

                Thank you Jay Bilas.

Not that I am one (currently)...but most definitely have been known to play one on TV....... ;)

Wichita St. is KNOWN for it's BIG-TIME DEFENSE and AGGRESSIVE "box-out" rebounding. Wichita St. returns a veteran team that WILL BE competing for a National Championship. Wichita St. has EVAN WESSEL. Wichita St. is a REAL threat to dismantle the "shoe contract" paradigm.

OF COURSE the rules will be changed this year. Lest not us forget the "powers that be" know EXACTLY how to protect the "shoe contracts".

                    • Wait - aren't we now a "shoe contract"?

I believe another rule interpretation affects shooters. Jumping into a defender used to put the guy with the ball on the line for throws. I think that's supposed to be called a charge.

Been a while since I read how that was going to be called, but, as I recall, if the defender maintained verticality - even if he's off the floor - and the shooter jumped into him - that's a charge. I thought derfenders were supposed to get a little more benefit of doubt if both players were moving and the shooter's motion caused contact.

More stuff I sort of recall. Didn't they move the charge arc out to 4'? If we've got athletic guys who can drive to the basket, defenders can't bump them off their routes, and a secondary defender can't set up within 4' of the basket...I think I know what's going to happen. Shamet and Keyser are going to love this. McDuffie can play PF at 6'8", 185. Taylor is quick on quick and can't be touched if he's driving.

I checked out phog.net's thread on Marshall's contract when it was longer than ours. One of the posts there said Marshall was earning his $$$ and that he recruited 2 years ahead of what he needed. I thought it odd that a KU fan figured that out before we did.

Marshall has Hamilton, Shaq, and Kelly as screen setters. He's got Frankamp, Shamet, Taylor, and Keyser as guys to work off of screens. He's got McDuffie, an underweight, but smooth as silk guy, who can't be touched and isn't allowed to touch anybody, so his thin frame isn't a factor.

From every appearance, Marshall has his last two recruiting classes absolutely set up to maximize the new officiating strategies. Like the KU fan said, Marshall recruits 2 years in advance of what he needs.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

                      • I like it Aargh! I like it!!!! Let's see how it plays out. Perhaps Master Marshall is not only two years ahead in recruiting (with what I somewhat agree with)...but more so two years ahead of CBS, the NCAA, whichever advertiser can write the networks the biggest check, and SHOE CONTRACTS factories as well!!!! :)

New touchy rules??? For-ged-a-bout-it. Master Marshall has already got that handled!!!!

Bring on the BS!!! GO SHOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we by chance do make it to the final 4 and are leading in the last 4 minutes, they will conveniently suspend the new rules for the blueblood school we are playing, as per NCAA guidelines. It's the blueblood freedom to pressure clause.

                            • There will be a lot of fouls called early and we will need to adjust, but this team is ridiculously athletic and will make that change. This is an important change for those of us who have complained about Evansville's grab fest twice a year, or all the bumping of cutters bogging down the offense. We adjusted fine when they attempted to clean up the game two years ago because we have such skilled athletes trained in fundamental defense where you move your feet and maintain position.

This is a needed change. I also recall the rules now allowing arm bars in the post (which I think is good since offensive players lean on the defensive ones to get leverage). In my opinion perimeter and off-ball defense was becoming way too physical. Where I would like to see the defense get the benefit of the doubt is when the offensive player initiates contact on drives. Time will tell if officials stick with the enforcement.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

I theory, this should be a good thing, but the adjustment period will be brutal.
