One place the closer call may hurt the Shockers and other teams who try to play great defense is how they allow a team to fight through screens at the 3 point line. Teams may have to defend under the screen which creates more open 3 point looks.

In my opinion our defenders defend _the right way_. Meaning, they cut off angles, call switches, rotate in the zone properly, cheat over off the help-side appropriately, etc. We don't just "get more aggressive than the other team" on man-on-man defense in order to be better defensively. Referees calling tighter defense won't affect us as much as it will other teams that simply try to dominate defensively with more aggression or hustle (aka, crappy P5 teams that only recruit knuckle-dragging athletes).
Also, we have good 3 point shooters, which plays into the fact that traditionally if we score 75+, we're extremely likely to win.
I'm optimistic about the tighter games being called.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

This is yet another rule change that benefits the upper tier programs that can recruit
many four and five star players. Whether we are one of those programs or not I don't
like rule changes that tend to make the playing field (court) uneven. I wish the rules
folks would leave a good thing alone and stop tinkering.

The rule change is what it is. Can't change it now, and just have to deal with it. The goal is to obviously increase freedom of movement with the ball, and skill and athleticism will definitely be a big factor. I have no worries about Shocker players matching up athletically with anyone in the country. This rule change does not hurt the Shockers if you ask me, it should help us. It should help WSU stop getting violated by teams like Illinois State who body up and play physical to make up for deficiencies. It hurts teams like UNI who play a slow tempo, and typically are undersized.
The only way this hurts the Shockers is if two things happen, our post is drastically outsized and lacks athleticism against an opponent (doubt it, might be against Utah) and the other is if the team can't shoot free throws, or gets cold from the line during a certain game. I guess the 3rd option would be if the refs are whistle happy unfairly in a game.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the game evolves over the next couple years. There will be a learning curve for a lot of teams, but the Shockers are some basketball egg heads, they got this.

If you want 50's / 60's basketball remove the shot clock entirely. I believe the rule change will
make college look more like the NBA regular season which bores me to tears. I think a shot
clock is necessary or you might get games like Virgina 4 North Carolina 2 when Sampson
dominated college basketball but watching each team shoot 30 free throws a game is boring. I
hope it doesn't turn out as bad as it sounds.

How many 6'7" 220lb guys were there taking 2-3 running strides from the non-existent 3PT line to the rim playing college ball in the 50s and 60s? The game has changed. Mostly for the better. I'm all for cleaning up the game, but it has to be a two-way street. Bull-rushes have to be charges. Moving screens have to actually be called.
