Gregg & Lynn Marshall sighting at the Wichita Chamber Annual Meeting last night. This could possibly be why he missed the show.

And an early morning appearance on Morning Joe. Not a show I watch regularly, but it was cool to see some WSU get a lot of love. Marshall was a busy man the last 24hrs.

I like these scrimmages. IMO they are a much better tool for evaluating and improving your team than another exhibition blowout over an overmatched D-2 or NAIA opponent. However, I am not sure that the "score" is very meaningful.

We pretty much know that our veterans bring to the table so I'm not too concerned about Fred (who apparently DNP), Ron, Evan and Anton. They are pretty much proven commodities. Nor does it make much difference what the walk-ons did if they played at all.

It would be nice to hear how our sophomores and freshman classes plus B-Wam performed. Since the bulk of our front court players are in that group and since that is where the big question marks are for this team it would be interesting to hear how those players fared against a Big 12 opponent. Also wondering how our freshman handled this level of competition? How was the scrimmage officiated? Was it called tightly in anticipation of the emphasis on reducing the physicality of the game? If so how did the Shocks handle that? Any issues in dealing with the new 30 second shot clock?

I was hoping to hear some input on those areas from the 3G radio show last night which proved to be a false start.

@PaulS:uellentrop: Gregg Marshall liked the way his big men rebounded in Saturday's scrimmage. Anton Grady scored. Sore hamstring limited VanVleet and he is

@PaulS:uellentrop: resting this week in practice. May play Saturday in the exhibition game. Lots of fouls called Saturday.

Grady scoring, front court rebounding are very positive. We know the back court is in good shape.

If the bigs were rebounding to a point that Marshall likes it enough to commend them, I'm even more excited than I already was.

@PaulS:uellentrop: We will be preparing you for foul shots for weeks. Ron Baker said Satuday's scrimmage was the slowest game he's played in. Reported 36 fouls

@PaulS:uellentrop: the first 20 minutes. NO TOUCHING!

Maybe McDuffie doesn't need to bulk up.

I'll always remember the Bradley game a number of years back when the Shocker crowd become so frustrated that they began chanting
"No More Whistles (CLAP, CLAP, clap, clap, clap)" and that was after a series of calls that went against Bradley not the Shockers.

Me thinks that cheer could be resurrected this year.

However, if they are going to call the game that closely I would like to see them emphasize calling the foul on the player who initiates the contact. No more allowing the offensive player to deliberating bull rush a defender or jump into a defender to draw a foul. That should be an offensive foul regardless of whether the defender is stationary or not.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. May not have the luxury of redshirting any players if excessive fouls become an issue.

Could be that the coaches, as a training tool, requested the officials to call a zero tolerance game in the first 20 minutes for any defender using their hands in any way to check an offensive player in order to force the players to play good position defense and moving their feet. Another reason the scores from these scrimmages don't mean too much. You don't really know what kind of conditions the coaches tried to create which may or may not be what they will actually experience in a real game. OTOH, maybe that is just the way this year is going to be called.

In any case, from everything we have heard it sounds like more fouls are on the way.

Also that remember that, despite whatever "emphasis" the officials say they're putting on whatever, by the time conference play starts things will have, inevitably, regressed back to the mean.

Someone should check with coach on the radio show, make sure he feels comfortable with their ability to shoot free throws if there's gonna be a lot of fouls.

They claim that won't be the case this year but only time will tell for sure. If the games become unwatchable they may have to re-evaluate. OTOH, the game does need to be cleaned up a bit. If they are serious about calling the games more tightly I wonder if we will start seeing more zone defenses.

That would be a good question for a staunch man-to-man proponent like Coach Marshall.
