BTW, there were more than a few references to banners hanging in the rafters with not so subtle hints that Tekele, Fred and Ron should probably be so honored n the future. I thought I even caught one hint about maybe Warren (Armstrong) Jabali joining that group as well.

There are three other people that I would like to suggest to add to that list of future rafter-ites. The 1st of course is Coach Marshall himself. The 2nd person would be Alex Harden. I was hoping someone with WSU was tracking the WNBA draft last night and at the end of the proceedings, in the event Alex was drafted, make that announcement. As I found out when I got home Alex was drafted #18. Which was a very pleasant surprise. That would have been a neat moment even though Alex was not there. And finally, since Volleyball plays in Koch Arena I think a Lambo banner sometime down the line would be appropriate.

I also found it interesting that some of the coaches mentioned this.

Tekele Cotton is my all-time favorite Shocker, and given the guys he is ahead of in favoritism on this current roster, I don't see that changing any time soon. I firmly believe that Cotton is about a big of a winner as you can be, and that he should have been 1st-Team All-MVC the past 2 years. But I don't think his jersey should be retired. He perfectly embodied what it took to be a Shocker, and was huge part of some great teams, but I think if we're being honest, the transcendental nature of ability that the jersey-retirees hold just wasn't quite there. It's probably part of why he is my favorite player. He did it all, with class, and he did it without all of the God-given talents that others have.

Now.....Fred VanVleet and Gregg Marshall? Go ahead and start working on what photos they would like on their banners.

Ron will be up there too.

Kansas kid, not highly recruited, becomes big time star on (one of) the windiest program(s)in the country, future NBA career

It's the stuff movies are made about.

            Fred, Ron, Cle

All are All-Americans. All should be in the rafters.

Guidelines, guys, guidelines. If you don't set actual guidelines for what constitutes having your jersey retired, in another ten years our team on the floor will be wearing jerseys with starting numbers in the 60's. You can't put everyone that makes a splash up in the rafters. You have to make it special -- really special -- so it means something.

I don't know what guidelines you're going by but all 3 of theese guys are more worthy than Cliff Levingston. The only knock on Cle is only 2 years here.

Cliffs jersey was retired during the down years. It was a reminder of what used to be and what could be. He certainly is one of the all time greats, but not really on the level of the other 4.

I don't think it is a failure of selectivity to lobby for Cle, FVV and Ron to all have their number retired. The flipside of your argument applies here as well- if you don't retire the numbers of those three, with all that they have accomplished and the fact that each has seemingly met the criteria for such an honor, then whose number will ever be worthy of retirement?

There are a lot of numbers to choose from. I don't think anyone wants to retire a dozen at once, just the ones who have earned it in spades.

If we are going by strict criteria, Cleo Littleton's highest honor was Honorable Mention AP All American in 1954-55, and Cliff's was 3rd Team on the Basketball Times release, which is probably a dozen steps below similar honors from SB Nation from a prestige and credibility standpoint. Ross McBurney was the school's first Consensus All American, on the other hand, and he remains largely anonymous to this day.

If fair is fair, then we gotta evict about half our honorees.

You don't have to retire numbers. The honor is have your likeness hanging from the rafters. Ralph Miller doesn't have a number.

It's not #42 that was special. It was the guy who happened to be wearing #42 at the time.
