I agree that for the most part ShockerHoops is a nice community.

I've made my point and don't need to elaborate.

If Smart does indeed sign with the Shockers, then maybe I'll comment on the ethical angle.
Kyle's following of Shocker Compliance has nothing to do with Smart. It's part of his role as assistant coach as his foreign connections will pay huge dividends cutting through eligibility red tape and confusion. Nothing else to see there.
As far as Smart goes, he is not part of some package deal. That's the sort of stuff reserved for 7' 5 star players. If he is good enough to get recruited on his own merit, so be it

    • His theory requires the belief of a few assumptions:

      1. Smart didn't sign with Loyola because of "tampering" by WSU. There is no evidence to support this. Nothing but speculation. I'll speculate, too, and say I think he didn't sign because he thought he could get a better offer.

      2. The hiring of Linstead is an attempt to get Smart at WSU. Again, no evidence. And a guy who couldn't get a better offer than Loyola isn't worth the value of an assistant coaching position. He ain't no Seventh Woods. As @WuDrWu: insinuates, that hire has much more to do with contacts and pipeline that it does one player who may or may not be at a level to contribute at WSU.

I wonder if swellafelon is going to investigate the ethics of every coaching hire that resulted in the signing of a player who once decommitted from another school?

EXACTLY. The other 3 don't deserve to be grouped in with him. They are entitled to their own opinions, and I'm sure the other three would appreciate it if we give them a little benefit of the doubt! :)

Here's one that's just as ridiculous (and stupid):
Did Porter Moser tamper with Milton Doyle to get him to transfer from KU to Loyola? After all, if he was homesick he could have transferred to DePaul, UIC, Chicago State or Notre Dame.

I think something fishy is going on (/sarcasm off).

One of your more beautifully constructed posts, khan.

                  • How is @swellafelon going to feel when he finds out Smart dumped LoChic so that he could walk on at WSU? :)

The thought did cross my mind. Walker is gone...

Not really. People often forget that players make these decisions. All the coaches can do is talk to them. At the end of the day, it comes down to the player, not the coaches. Nobody is "stealing" anybody when a player decommits...the player is changing their mind. Be frustrated with the player, not the other program.

Had Bill Self or Jim Groce talked Fred VanVleet out of his commitment to WSU to go to KU or UI instead (and yes, I know Fred would not have done that, but it's a legitimate logical comparison, so humor me), would you think it was wrong?

So yes, I would say if someone on behalf of WSU talked Smart out of his commitment, it is wrong. But I really doubt that is what happened.

How would that be the same?

                            • The story goes there was effort by KU and others to get Fred after his verbal. If it was done before the LOI, yes it's the same. And, it's just part of recruitment.

                              • It sounded like Carl Hall was talked out of a verbal with VCU. Or we bribed him with $50k.
