I think he basically did imply that. Didn't he say it certainly was no embarrassment to lose to a team as good as Wichita State?

That's the truth. The plays 3G drew up we're creative, the announcers called him the mad scientist of inbound plays. After bill self called a time out, WSU went on a run and KU turned the ball over. That happened at least twice that I can remember. And then when bill went to zone, that really showed me who the better in game coach was yesterday. Bill had no answers, knew we struggled with the zone in the past and tried to slow us down with it. KU couldn't play their game against us. They couldn't dictate, WSU did.

I was talking to a storied HS coach one time and someone mentioned how good of a coach Roy Williams was. The coach just looked at the guy and scoffed. He then said "give him the West High Girls and see how good of a coach he is". I about fell over laughing but it is the truth. While recruiting is a huge part of coaching, the rest is what separates the great from the good and mediocre.

Give Marshall the West High girls and Self the West High girls and I would say there would be no comparison on which team would be better.

I love these questions. As an Iowa State fan, I would like to ask if his team had a let down after losing their "Super Bowl" in the Big 12 tournament?

Coach Self did you consider at any point of inserting Frankamp into the game for some outside scoring...oops, sorry.

Coach Self, could you talk a bit about how your #1 SoS prepared you for your match up with mid-major and #7 seeded Wichita State? A follow-up would be did your preparation for Wichita State mirror your preparation for the Bradley and UNI games in previous tournaments?

Truly great coaches can take their team and beat you and then trade teams and take their team and beat you. Gregg is one of those. Some coaches have problems getting the first part.

                    Yes.

Shortly after the second half began, the realization of a possible defeat slowly infiltrated Coach Self's brain.

As the second half wore on, his angst and discomfort slowly morphed into an acceptance of a crushing and humiliating defeat. And his body language reflected the bitter outcome. A small boy exclaimed, "The emporer has no clothes."

In the post game comments, Coach Self tried to show grace and give praise to the victor, but he could not hide the fact that the curtain had been pulled back.

Sort of. A truly great coach also recognizes when he is tremendously outgunned, and he will likely not win no matter how good the X's and O's are. He knows in that scenario that he has to recruit his butt off, and being a great coach, is capable of doing so.

If the athletes are fairly equivalent though, I agree with your assertion.

For me, a truly great coach can build a program from scratch, not just take a successful one over and do well. In my opinion, those types of coaches are truly special.

You're kidding right? That's Iowa state's super bowl.
You don't exactly tear it up in March.

Uh, yeah, I noticed. I was turning around a typical KU mock and putting it back on them. And no, it isn't Iowa State's Super Bowl anymore. We wouldn't have been content this year apart from an outright Big 12 championship and/or going to the Final Four.

Now, back to mocking KU. "Coach Self, does Wayne Selden have to wear a nametag to games? He looks totally different from game to game?"

Coach Self, do you think you'll have any other players want to leave and transfer to Wichita State?

Give Marshall the West High girls and give Self his current team. I predict Marshall would cover the spread.
