This has been a factual fallacy for decades. Soon (perhaps it even became effective this academic year, I don't know) KU will have slightly more stringent admissions standards than the rest of the KBoR schools, but since forever they have all literally had identical requirements - purposefully and by design of the KBoR. The whole KU mindset that produces the comment you reference simply sums up in a nutshell the disconnect with reality that KU culture has. They honestly have no idea how utterly ridiculous they look everytime they bring it up.

They do a similar thing to K-Staters as well, only in that case the academic rankings margin between the two schools is essentially a wash, and neither one is ever going to impress anyone on a national scale. They are both middle-of-the-pack in the B12 academically, and it is not as if the B12 is an academic stalwart.

It as if the mentality at KU, and amongst their supporters, is that if they say something enough times amongst themselves then it must be true, reality be damned. It is so damned asinine it is hilarious.

Funny... More like WSU is the school people come to after they're done partying their faces off at KU and want to actually do something with their life.

KU is still the best, WSU beating them 1000 times won't change that. We suck and they rule. Marshall is a clown and so is Fred, but they get to be clowns because they won. They're happy none of their players and coaches act like that. The entire reason they lost is on them and nothing at all to do with how WSU played or was coached. Self sucks, the players gave no effort and if they had wanted to they would have won and there was nothing WSU was ever going to do about it. They are still the best.

Yep. Kansas is a long way from being a leading national university.

Their World News Report ranking of 106th is mediocre, but at least it's giant leaps beyond their #297 ranking from Forbes.

I'm sure KU's academics aren't awful, but they're miles away from something you use to put down others over.

KU has thought for years that they are just too cool for school. Back in the early 90s, the law school dean wrote a memo which stated that Washburn Law School was far inferior to KU, that only the dumb people went there, etc. At the time, KU had a professor who was ALLEGEDLY trading grades for sexual favors. Of course, the memo was leaked to the press.

Up until 1997 or so, each of the regents universities was required to admit all in-state comers who met some really minimal standards. This was dumb, and I'm glad it changed.

The things that KU has done over the years that are really anger inducing have little to do with athletics and make for a fairly long list. Nothing is more enraging than the previously referenced pitch to the BOR - which was alarmingly accepted, no less - that KU should have merely slightly more stringent admissions standards for the sole purpose of allowing them to say they were the most rigorous admissions institution in Kansas. Literally engineering phony bragging rights. This seems like, I don't know, claiming to be certain to win a game that you won't let the other team play in.

I feel like this best embodies the KU narcissism, and it carries over to everything. They have such a need to feel superior that they'll say or do anything to convince themselves of it, but they almost never deliver.

OK, someone finally pushed my button. I had the option to go to WSU and KU. They were and are the only two schools to offer the professional program I wanted to attend in the state of Kansas. The application process at that time was very competitive and only one in every 50 or so applicants could get into each program. I was selected to both. I chose WSU. I nailed the interview at KU and got follow up phone calls from committee about why I would choose WSU over KU. My mom called it "Post Toasties"- When you thought more of yourself than others thought of you. I felt that way about everyone at KU. I told KU to stick it then, and even though I am not provoking anyone outside of this board, the feeling hasn't changed. And it's still Rip Em Up, Tear Em Up, Give Em Hell Shockers!

I'm not sure about the 1997 proposal. I know that currently all board of regents schools in Kansas have automatic admission for a set of criteria. In fall 2016, KU's will go up marginally. If they did the same type of thing in 1997, it sounds like they are doing it again. Like I said, I don't know the history. I just know that this is a very recent problem too. KU benefits from an undeserved perception that they are an academic powerhouse in Kansas. It's so incredibly frustrating. Having moved out of the state, I can tell you that Wichita State and KU are viewed the same across the board. The exceptions are specific majors. Obviously, in the engineering field people are going to know the aerospace program at WSU first. Barring specific knowledge of a program, the country views the two as the same. Their attempt to marginally increase the requirements is just an attempt to keep people in Kansas thinking they're on the level of Harvard.

                        Engineering?

You do know WSU was just ranked in top 100 of US News, in the engineering school segment? Yeah, we just eaked in at #99, but so did KU and K-State who were literally just 2 or 3 spots in front of WSU in the list.

WSU also completely blows the doors off of KU and K-State with regards to engineering research R&D expenditures/funding. It's not even close.

I was in the exact same boat in 2010 with schools applied and accepted to. I got my aerospace engineering degree from Wichita State in 2014. If he wants any perspective from someone who was in a similar spot, PM me.

Interesting hearing these stories about applying for KU and WSU. Back in the mid 80s when I was a wee lad coming out of high school, I was down to choosing between KU and WSU after eliminating North Texas (due to out of state cost and the fact that I wasn't ready for that juggernaut of a music school). Auditions at both places went well, and the scholly offers from both were decent, but everything at KU was about what they had done. The talk at WSU was about here is what we are going to be doing in the next 4-5 years, and you can be a part of it. Long story short, I played in great ensembles, capped ensemble wise by a performance at a national convention where many said we played better than Eastman (equivalent of beating the John Wooden UCLA teams), and personally by being selected to spend the summer of 1989 at Walt Disney World in the All-American College Orchestra.

I am so proud to be a fan of this team, honored to be a fan, and thrilled beyond description at what the next decade or two holds for Wichita State, both in athletics and beyond. With the Innovation Campus starting to materialize, I do believe some amazing times are just over the horizon.

My son was offered big $$ for engineering and physics scholarships at both Colorado School of Mines and Colorado U. We did a visit to both programs but the out of state tuition prompted him to stay in state. KU offered a good scholarship but he decided WSU had a better program. KU called, called, mailed, called, mailed and called some more and didn't seem to understand by he accepted WSU: WSU had a better program.

I manage a reasonably large Pharmaceutical Chemistry lab (about 70 employees) located in McPherson. We hire applicants with BS, MAsters and PhD Chem/Biochem degrees. Of course we recruit nationally, but the majority of my new employees come from the state of Kansas, specifically WSU and the small private schools around the state. The WSU grads are almost always great! I have yet to interview a KU grad that wasn't a pre-med going in to school and that barely graduated after 6+ years. The chemistry program at WSU is severely under-rated at all levels!
