Uh oh. When JH4P gets home from biddy ball today and sees this comment, be prepared for a 10-paragraph novel on how wrong and illogical you are.

FWIW, I totally agree with you.

                I
am not smart enough to know where the stats come from, though. Could the Big 12 game the stats? How do you determine defensive efficiency strength in a round robin? What makes the Big 12 a strong defensive conference with 5 in the top 30 vs a conference that just has offense in the bottom 30? Is it solely based on out-of-conference games that we can measure that?
The Big 12 is so aware of its perception that it has successfully gamed every rating system known to man. Sounds reasonable, right?

Look, the Big 12 is the best conference top to bottom in the country according to nearly every objective measure. The fact that some here use their eyes while JH4P is one of the few who uses objective (and correct, because the RPI is a joke) metrics drives me nuts.

Where are these rankings you speak of and how are they calculated? Statistics:

Iowa State is the #10 scoring offense in the country. West Virginia is at #36, and there are no other Big 12 teams in the top 50.

Baylor is #22 scoring defense, TCU is #40, and Texas is #43. No other Big 12 team is in the top 50.

They have two teams in the top 50 in assists per game, five teams in the top 50 for rebounds per game, etc. Statistically, which is an objective measure, I don't see it.

I don't know if you were attempting to be snarky, or I just read your comment wrong.

I was not insinuating one way or the other how I think the system works. Are you arguing that it is impossible to game the kenpom system? I honestly don't have any idea how the stats work in these types of situations. If no non-conference games were played, would kenpom accurately be able to distinguish between good defensive conferences and bad offensive conferences? I know it's definitely possible to game RPI, but that's part of the reason it's a joke, as you say.

To me, it seems like it's definitely impossible to "game" offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency. But KenPom's overall rank is different from which teams have the best offensive and defensive efficiency.

According to this, December was a bad month for the Shocks form a standpoint of offensive efficiency.

I don't think anyone needs stats to know that.
