Having watched Darius and Tekele play their last game in Koch arena (an exceptionally memorable one), how will next year's team look?
Fred will again be the best PG in America
Ron will be one of the best SGs in the country
Evan Wessel will STILL be tough and able to contribute as a starter at either forward position
Shaq will be the go to in the post. Big things ahead for this young man!
What about the rest of the team?
Kelly and Brown have shown potential, but haven't quite put it all together. Both will be in the rotation and battling for the 5th starter position next year. Kelly occasionally gets lost, and the offensive end of the game was too fast for him this year. If that slows down, he has the talent to be a big time scorer as an upperclassman. Brown looks to be a little further along. His defense was very good in conference play. He shoots the rock. Needs to get a little bit better handles, but I see him taking big strides this off season.
Glass and Wamukota are raw, and unfortunately they will be seniors next year. It's hard to know if they will improve enough to be major factors next season. With Carter on his way out, I think one or both will be relied upon to fill the frontcourt gap.
Henderson/Holland/Nurger all have serious work to do if they want to be contributors. They are all capable, but time may be critical for these guys to get their careers under way before it's too late.
Newcomers:
Frankamp is eligible starting in late December. I'm excited about his ability to spell VanVleet and Baker a bit; and as a transfer, he should be ready from the get-go.
I'm excited to see what Taylor can do. He could be the back-up PG very early in the season or a total non-factor. Quickness, strength, and defense give him an early edge at PT.
Shamet reminds me of Murry. He needs to add strength, but if he picks up the offensive/defensive schemes early in the season, he will be a mainstay in the rotation and a three year starter.
What's not to love about Markis McDuffie? His strength! I'm sure he has toughness and he definitely has skill and length. We will need him as a PF next year more so than at SF, but I don't know that he will be strong enough to bang down low. I would not be surprised to see him start his career at the end of the bench and grow with time.
The difference between winning the MVC in 2016 and winning the National Championship could be Eric Hamilton. He's a 6-9, 230 lb run and jump athlete that can stroke it from 3. Can he defend a center? Does he have a single post move? Can he drive the hoop with a smaller defender on him? If the answer to all three is yes, then the Shockers are going to have another HUGE year.
