I'm not saying that he is a bad kid or that I am in any way better, but when you represent a team and a university and a city, you have to evaluate all of your actions to make sure that you're putting forth an acceptable image at all times. It comes with the territory. Those that are getting upset about others "casting stones" have never and probably will never be on Conner's level of notoriety, and he's only played one year of college basketball. He's not just a kid, unfortunately. He is/will be one of the faces of Wichita State. I care about Wichita State's image and CF is proving that he doesn't, and thus isn't a good fit. If Bardo was arrested for a DUI, I'd want him gone. If Marshall was arrested for a DUI, I'd want him gone. If any other player was arrested for a DUI, I'd want them gone as well. Those would all be terrible and unfortunate. It would upset me. But it's for a greater good. You have to stand for something.

I'm not judging him as a human being, I'm evaluating him as an applicant. With this now on his record, he's not getting the job.
I can get on board with this. I don't agree with all of it, but the tone of it is fair, and understandable. ShockValue is just acting like a tool about it, that is my main issue with him or her. I wouldn't be upset if they dismiss CF... it is possible that is what he will get, and deserves. But a deriding, rude and judgmental attitude is something I cannot put up with in any form. No one is perfect. No one.

While I have not been directly affected by drinking and driving, my best friend's sister was killed by a drunk driver. And I have a friend who is currently serving prison time for killing a passenger in his car while he was driving drunk. I have very little tolerance for this. I will trust Marshall and the legal system to handle the punitive side.

If he suits up for WSU next season I will root for him, but I will not be saddened if he doesn't.

I'm sorry. I thought this was a forum where opinions could be expressed.

I will on a rare occasion partake just for grins, in fact I sampled a delicious Honey Jack and Blackberry Lemonade concoction at an area steakhouse this weekend. But I had 1, not 16. I find that level of irresponsibility deplorable but it's so damned accepted today, it's like welfare. It's just the way that it is now, even if it's abused to a level almost unfathomable.

I feel for Conner. He made a mistake, and it's a bad one, and one likely not to sit well with HCGM. I would not want to be Conner today.

I have no idea what will happen, but I trust our Coach do what's best for all involved so I will not speculate here. I would ask, however, was it reported who was with him, because that could concern me.
Again, I never said it was acceptable; nor should it be.

Much like when a person I know very well who got one, they knew they were a dumbazz for what they did. Hell, I might have even told them that.

It's how you respond to your mistakes and adversity that shows what kind of person you are. Time will tell what CF does.

My bad. You can post your opinions. Just sounded like you were the one making the decisions.... sure seemed like it. The "he's NOT getting the job" threw me off. I thought you already threw him off the team for HCGM

And my opinion is expressed as well. See how this message board stuff works?

I am more interested in this from the team perspective. Whether or not Connor gets kicked off the team probably isn't a question of punishment and forgiveness--it's HCGM deciding whether that's the sort of character he wants around the rest of his guys, whether he expects things to get better or worse, and, let's be straight about it, whether Connor's talent outweighs the trouble. So what's the balance? If a guy jaywalks, he's not some sort of moral cancer. If he eats babies, it's probably best to free up that scholarship. DUI is in between. So, fun question for the crowd--if you were a coach, what's the worst thing someone could do and not get kicked off your team? Does your answer change if it's LeBron James? What if it's some practice player? How about a recruit? I'm curious to hear your opinions, and I'm not just trying to stir the pot. I think there are a lot of legitimate approaches here.

I'll admit I don't entirely know my own answers, but for me, patterns of behavior matter a lot. I don't know anything at all about Connor so I really don't know if this is an aberration or if it's completely in character for him. I would hope Coach Marshall has a sense of that one way or the other. I am concerned that in a three-week sample we already have an issue like this and I worry about three more years, but I also know that's the kind of extrapolative logic that says Tevin Glass is a first-round pick based on per-40 stats. Then again, we all kinda think Tevin should get more minutes, right? First impressions matter.

Fair enough. I just have never felt the need to add an apologetic IMO at the end of every statement I type so I don't upset someone else. I'm the one submitting it, it's my opinion.

                    Read it solely as that.

Very much this. I would add that I will root for him based upon his response. If he does not learn and grow and show remorse (more than SAYING he's sorry) then I personally will find it very difficult to support him in a traditional way. I'd rather support kids I believe are learning how to be productive adults, relatively speaking. But I realize I'm in the vast minority.

                        • He made a big mistake. A mistake I made way too many times in college. I just didn't get caught. Hopefully he learns from his mistake.

Listen, I am actually materially contributing to this thread (whether you agree or disagree is moot); you are not. You are simply trying to get into a tick-for-tat BS fest with me, and I'm not going down that road. I don't put people on ignore because I think it's lame, but I am no longer going to be reciprocating this tangent with you.

A lot of it depends on the reaction of the player.

If player A misses a team meeting and goes all Alan Iverson on me and starts the MEETING, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A MEETING. He is not long on the team.

If player B gets a DUI and right after gave me a call telling me he F'ed up and explained the situation, I'll listen and make a decision.

                              • He made a mistake that a lot of others have made. The court system will take care of his legal punishment. HCGM will take care of his Shocker punishment. Lots of steps at the Chuck that he will surely become friends with.

I can just hear the calls on tonight's Coaches show.
