After that post I realized that it might sound as if I want the other teram to make free throws just to see the reaction which is not the case. Just an okay consollation prize I guess.

I don't subscribe to the "I paid for my ticket, I can do what I want" philosophy. There are behaviors you expect at a sporting event, like clapping, cheering and standing up during crucial or exciting parts of the game. Even some whistling is expected.

But when it is so loud that it hurts the ears of those around him, he needs to be told to stop or be escorted out of the arena. No one expets to go to a sporting event and experience physical discomfort at the hands (or sounds) of other spectators.

Are there 3 whistlers or are the sound waves bouncing around the arena creating an auditory illusion, making it sound like 3 whistlers?

Seriously though, I see nothing wrong the guy in the student section doing what he does, I just hope he limits the screeeeching to free throws.

I have yet to notice a whistler at any of the games. Only been to 4 games so maybe I wasn't there when he was. I can understand where that would be annoying.

With that said I know I wouldn't let it bother me. I'm there to watch a game not police everybody elses behavior. It just seems to me that whether I'm in Wal-Mart, driving down the road or say at a game everybody is always focused on how somebody else is doing some injustice to them rather than focusing on whatever task is at hand. I've found that if you quit focusing on things you can't control and start focusing on things you can life is much easier.

I'm sure I'll get ripped for that but seriously it seems to be something more and more people do on a regular basis.

I wish I could ignore it and not let it bother me, but he's standing right next to me, actually causing pain to my ears. Yelling is one thing, but a high pitch squeal, 6 times for every free throw equals 120 times in a game if the opponent shoots 20 free throws. I don't know how loud the guy in the student section is, but if it's any where near as loud as the guy next to me, I can understand why some people are mad.

I'm never anywhere near one of them and find it annoying as hell. All I can do is shake my head and wonder if he actually thinks his whilstling effects the shooter. From earlier in this thread apparently some are dumb enough to think so.

Must be a slow day here? I haven't been able to attend many games this year, but I have heard it on the internet feed. Of course, it doesn't really bother me at home. Is whistling really any different than booing or yelling? In some cultures, a whistle is considered to be a "boo."

I have always found dead silence to be more disturbing than noise during a free throw.

                        vancedave,

Can a take an air horn and blow it in your ear? I mean, how is an air horn any different than yelling or booing really?

In Decibels here is what the people around the "Whistlers" are subjected to..

90dB - Level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss
115dB - Sandblasting, Loud Rock Concert (WSU Crowd?)
                        125dB - Pain begins
                        126dB - Loud whistling
140dB - Jet engine at 100', Gun Blast
180dB - Death of hearing tissue
                        194dB - Loudest sound possible

One of the chronic "Whistle Guys" is a LONG TIME Shocker fan and does his thing at baseball games too. He knows who he is and at least a couple of his compadres are regulars here. He also is a regular caller on the radio shows.

There's no doubting his allegiance to the Shocks, just his consideration for those seated nearby. He's done if for years, although, his barrage is not constant like the "New Uber-Annoying Whistle Guy".

Mr. Moose - what the heck was that all about? I did not say I agree with whistling in anyone's ear or anything of the sort. By the same token, comparing it to an airhorn is not even close to being valid. An air horn is not a body part, it is an instrument designed to notify people of emergencies such as a fire.

A person's body odor might be offensive to some, but is that the same as bringing a skunk to the game? :wsu_posters:

...and in case you did not understand my "dead silence" comment. That was stating dead silence was more disturbing to me while shooting a free throw - not while sitting in the crowd.

One that was omitted from the list:
                              Symphonic music peak 120 - 137dB

The other article stating whistling at 126B - was saying "you can learn to whistle at over 126B."

All the other items on "the list" came from studies - this whistling was just from a BLOG teaching how to whistle loudly.

OK, we agree the "whistlers" should not whistle, or at the very least - not whistle into anyone's ear. Still it doesn't compare to an airhorn in my ear.

You know what is annoying, that same lady who just sat on her can as the rest of arena erupted on JT's dunk.

By the way, the perfect seat would be for him to be behind the visitors bench.
