  • Sometimes, when he is against bigger, more athletic front lines, I think he drives the lane too often.

    • Thanks for the breakdown Kai. I agree with your point and have been out there as expecting a fall off in other people's offensive efficiency given Cle's absence. But one mitigating factor is SOS--whether comparing this year to date vs. all of last year or the beginning it is a tougher schedule. The main thing is the heightened defensive focus without Cle.

      • I would like to point out that we are currently #6 in adjusted offense in the nation according to Kenpom, but only #19 in adjusted defense. I would argue that we have been hurt less by the loss of Cle's offense than by the collective loss of defense from our bigs and more veteran bench of last season.

No one is talking **** on Fred, no one is saying he sucks, no one is saying they're not glad Wichita State is on his jersey. We do have the right to talk about how he's not been as effective as last year. It is a very valid observation. And if you think I'm somehow just spewing nonsense, here are facts.

          FG% this year = .395
          FG% last year = .484

          3P% this year = .259
          3P% last year = .418

          FT% this year = .743
          FT% last year = .830

          REB this year = 3.4
          REB last year = 3.9

          AST this year = 5.0
          AST last year = 5.4

          TO this year = 1.4
          TO last year = 1.3

          STL this year = 2.6
          STL last year = 1.9

          PTS this year = 13.3
          PTS last year = 11.6
I think we all understand that 7 games is going to be a small sample but I wanted to give a little more context to this. Right now we're only talking about 4 three pointers and 3 two point shots that Van Vleet has missed that would get him back up to last year's efficiency numbers.

ESPN probably giving a fat bonus to the refs so a big east team can get embarrassed on a big stage.

              • The first 7 games of last year also included games against Emp. St, DePaul, William&Mary and Tennessee St. So the relative difference in SoS, which in this case is fairly significant, should also be considered.

I have been wishing a couple more of Fred's shots would fall. But we're basically one good shooting game away from being very near last year's numbers all the way around, without Cle, against a much more difficult schedule.

                • When talking about free throws, Coach always responds that he is "not worried." He probably needs to worry about Kelly from the line, that was awful.

For added context, WSU finished last year #8 offense, #12 defense.

                    • My observations from last night:
                      - That Whitehead kid is good. Really good. Not sure what happened to his shoulder, he came back in, made another 3 but then was on the bench for most of the remainder of the game. I hope he's okay. He's going to be a special player.
                      - That Rob Baker kid is pretty damn good as well. 9 of 11? Baker will hit 30 pts for a game or more before the season is over, maybe even at Detroit, given their style of play.
                      - A couple of days after posting that Darius is not Carl Hall he turns into Carl Hall. Great game for DC. Let me go on record now, Evan Wessel is not Cleanthony Early.
                      - R Kelly is starting to show some real chops down low. Has anybody watched the shoot arounds? What sort of range does he have? Because I don't think I've seen him put up anything beyond the FT line other than that ill-advised 3 pt attempt early.
                      - Nurger's lack of playing time was probably more to do with DC staying out of foul trouble than his lack of consistency. Although his lack of consistency (or ability to produce much when he was in) certainly was a factor in him not staying on the court much longer than he was. Did I just contradict myself?
                      - Tekele's finger is still bothering him. Otherwise, he and DC both would have been competing with King James on SC Top Ten.
                      - FVV's FT shooting propped up the team. This is starting to worry me. Glad it's still early in the season but this is not a trend I like.
                      - Anybody got the over/under for the Detroit game? First team to 80 wins it.

I just found the idea comical that shocker fans have forgotten how great Cle was. You're right, we all have every right to say whatever we want about Fred's play this year, myself included.

                        • IMO, three things have made Fred look human:

                          1) we lost a game.
                          2) he's not throwing up 1+ assist per game to a leaping giant at the rim.
                          3) his shot isn't falling.

In the early first half after Kelly had those back-to-back baskets the placed got super loud. And then on cue in the very next possession...Ron went in for the super slam. The announcers didn't say a word. The Koch was so loud the announcers didn't even try. They probably were looking at each other saying "forget it...I can't hear you anyways". A bit shell-shocked they were but no doubt loved it! And then they just went to commercial. :)
