New Mexico State: Mullings, the preseason Western Athletic Conference player of the year after averaging 16.8 points last season, took only three shots in 17 first-half minutes played. He was guarded by Cotton, Wichita State's top defender.
Expert recap and game analysis of the Wichita State Shockers vs. New Mexico State Aggies NCAAM game from November 14, 2014 on ESPN.

Great to see that happen so early on. That was a su-weet development that is a positive sign. Actually, I am liking our bigs and we will see how they

          perform versus the Tigers.

Morris, Shocker front-liners make good first impression

To anyone concerned that the Shockers are going to struggle to replace Lufile and Coleby shouldn’t worry.

In Shaq Morris, Rauno Nurger, Rashard Kelly and maybe even Bush Wamukota, the Shockers have an abundance of talented big guys new to the team. And there’s starting center Darius Carter, a senior who was limited to 12 minutes during Friday night’s season-opening 71-54 win over New Mexico State because of foul trouble.
Carter, primed for a big season, still had nine points and four rebounds. But it was the 6-foot-7, 260-pound Morris who stepped up big. He had the same numbers as Carter: 12 minutes, nine points, four rebounds. And it was his first game after redshirting in 2013-14.

I love the new guys. All of them. Way to go coaching staff. What a crop.

My main man is Rashard though. Can't wait to see him develop. That is one stud athlete!
I certainly have been as tough on Shaq as anyone without 3Gs in their name. I am happy to swallow some crow whole tonight, but I would remind everyone that this was one game. Shaq was a very nice surprise and was able to show off an array of talented moves, but he still made many mistakes and took a few plays off. Still, while it's just one game, tonight was a big step forward for the young man.

*Mother effer it was hot in there tonight.

*Pumped about Shaq. When he did something positive it made you feel good for him in the same way you felt good for Wessel last year when he was struggling. His game of arrival?

*Nurger looked a little more iffy than he has. Wasn't overly impressed.

*Guess the redshirts go to Brown and Glass?

*Holy snot we are hard loaded! Go play Legos or something Frankcamp. At the end of the year, the comparison between last year and this year might not by the W-L margin, but the average margin of victory amongst two undefeated seasons.

                      • A few quick post game thoughts.

NMSU geared their defense towards stopping Van Vleet. They double teamed him every time he tried to use a screen and it was pretty effective.

Cotton destroyed them going to the basket because that's what happens when you throw a safety on the basketball court.

Once again Wessel held his own against players 3 inches taller than him because that's what happens when you throw a safety on the basketball court.

Shaq was impressive. I'm guessing Shaq, Nurger, Kelly and Wamukota will be like last year's big man combo in that although you don't know who is stepping up tonight, you know that one of them will.

Shaq was really good tonight and we need Shaq to be good. Tonight, he was only player we had who could body up with their big body 280 lb. player on the defensive end.Shaq showed some nice moves that we all knew he had, but I was more impressed with his rebounding and defense. Losing our two 6'9 260 lb. players could hurt us unless Shaq continues to step up like he did tonight. Nurger and Bush will be fine in the Valley but they aren't ready yet to body up with elite, big players imo. Wessel on the other hand did a nice job of bodying up down low against the much bigger 6'8 225 pounder. He continues to amaze me with his ability to come up with big plays on loose balls at important times.

                          • Our defense was swarming, stifling, and debilitating. It was fun to watch. Most of our offense early on was a direct result of defensive plays. Cotton is so intuitive. He's so fun to watch. Baker casually knocked in 16. FVV was disrupted but still made some high-level assists. Wessel earns his keep. He doesn't score much, but he's solid defensively, hustles the hell out of every play, rebounds, and knows what the hell he's doing. He's solidly in our first 5 in my book. Kelly is a freak. He nearly had a HOLY SH*T putback dunk in the first half that would have tore Koch down. Shaq was impressive. If we get that every night, then our weaknesses will shrivel. Our youth is extremely far along this early in the year. We are definitely restocking the shelves.

Considering the level of opponent, the first game of the season, and the horrible officiating that kept the flow of the game to a standstill, I thought it was a great effort. Game was never in doubt from the opening tip.

Gonna be a fun season. Need to bury Memphis on Tuesday.

I enjoyed the halftime show. Both times he performed tonight. Not exactly a kid. Probably has had a few head injuries in his time and I assume his mother must have dropped in on the his head as a baby. Looks like I get to see it again tomorrow at the Shocker WBB game vs Creighton.

I agree that our guards are going to be as good a defensive tandem as there is. On the inside, we had very few blocks where last year, we would have had quite a few. We had to foul the big guy in the second half because we couldn't stop him from getting good position.
