I hate to say it...Shaq Morris might be the odd man out...and I think many of you know that their is a handful of players who came in this year who already pass him in the pecking order in the 9 man rotation...He will play this year...just out the door next year...he will leave on his own account due to playing time...its all about the playing time...you cant reach your goal at the end of the bench with no playing time...similiar to Mr White during the final 4 run...except Shaq wont eve have the luxury with those kind of minutes. Mr Hamilton is still up in the air at prep...Baker testing NBA waters...so there is several scenarios out there.

just the fact that he is not obligated to come to Wichita State...he could very well go else where...up in the air as in not locked in or committed to Wichita State.

3G was asked about the redshirt situation on his Coach's show Monday. He said no decisions on that had been made. Did not sound like he was in a particularly hurry to make any final decisions on that either. I think we will have a good idea who will redshirt, if anyone, after the Newman game.

I think if player a didn't log any minutes at at all he can be redshirted at any time. But TBH its just an honest guess with no education on the matter. I assume it works the same way as breaking a redshirt.

Yes. Someone can be redshirted and still be suited up, ready to go every game. Some players will wear street clothes and be inactive to clear up space for other players, but some players will be suited up, warm up with the team, and basically be the same as any other player, the coach just won't put them in.

Bylaw 12.8.3.1.3 (Page 78) Preseason Exhibitions/Preseason Practice Scrimmages During Initial Year.
During a student-athletes initial year of enrollment at the certifying institution, he or she may compete in preseason exhibition contests and preseason practice scrimmages (as permitted in the particular sport per Bylaw 17) without counting such competition as a season of competition. (Adopted 11/01/01, Revised 08/08/02, 10/31/02, 05/09/06, 07/31/14)

Bylaw 17.3.3 (Page 237) covers the preseason competitions allowed by Basketball which of course includes the 1 closed practice scrimmage against D-1 competition and 1 exhibition game against non-D-1 competition that the Shockers play.

Accordingly, this year Shockers who are eligible to redshirt are: Zach Brown, Corey Henderson, Rashard Kelly, Rauno Nurger, Jared Walker, Tevin Glass and Bush Wamukota. I expect the opportunity to redshirt will be removed for all but 1 to 3 of these players after the New Mexico State game and ultimately pretty much cleared up after the Newman game.

Once you enter a countable contest for even 1 second you have used up your year of eligibility unless you would otherwise qualify for a hardship waiver for non-controllable events (i.e. medical problems or injuries).

However, the rule regarding exhibitions/scrimmages only apply to those in their first year of enrollment at the institution. As long as you do not enter a countable contest the redshirt for these players is in place. Preseason Exhibitions and Preseason Scrimmages allowed by the NCAA are not countable contests only in your 1st year of enrollment.

Redshirts are not locked-in. They are often declared but don't have to be. In any case, they can be lost at anytime during a season simply by inserting a player into a countable contest. This happens more frequently in football where injury problems are more likely to force a coach's hand, but it can and occasionally does happen in basketball.

As I previously stated I think we will have our answer after the Newman game which is a countable contest in which it is likely that everyone that is going to play this year will see some action.

That is the way I read the bylaws. I did not find anyplace where they made a distinction by class. Only that it applies in the players 1st year of enrollment at the institution. In fact, I was kind of surprised how straight-forward and simple the rule seemed to be. That said maybe there is something in that tax-code like set of Bylaws that trumps that interpretation but if there was I would have expected it to be cross-referenced to the bylaw I cited.

Anyone can redshirt. Kelly Olynyk redshirted his Junior year after having played two years for Gonzaga.

Olynyk played college basketball at Gonzaga from 2009 to 2013. He was mostly a bench player for the Bulldogs in his freshman and sophomore years, averaging around 12 to 13 minutes per game. In order to improve his game and get stronger, Gonzaga and Olynyk agreed that he would redshirt his junior year (2011–12), meaning he would practice with the team, but not play.
Olynyk returned to the Bulldogs lineup for the first game of the 2012–13 season, and had a great season, being selected to the 2012–13 Academic All-America first team.^[6] Following his redshirted junior year, he opted for the NBA draft, thereby forgoing his senior year.
