Actually, I thouoght Brown acquitted himself well at the "open" practice. He didn't shine or exp;ode, but he wasn't constantly drawing the wrath of coaches, either. Looked very athletic and could shoot a bit. A redshirt year might do both him and the team a good service, but I think he could play and contribute this season, if needed.
"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

with shamet and mcduffie coming in next year, I don't think it's tht obvious. Brown may need to get some playing time this year. He has the skills and size to play right now.

Wonder if the potential transfer of Frankamp, will also play into this decision?

I know, I know, speculation at this point, but it could be an integral part of the decision.

            Why would we redshirt Brown?

Because VanVleet, Baker, and Cotton are going to play a ton of minutes and Henderson, Holland, and Wessel are going to take the pittance that is left over.

Those guys will only play as many minutes as are required to win comfortably. After that it's all about developing the rest of the guys to provide quality depth so that they can help in March for that push to a national title, in case one of the studs is injured or gets in foul trouble. Not to mention the reduced minutes keeps the starters fresh late into the season, so it's easier to play more minutes.

                Call it the Bumgarner effect.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

So Brown who was considered college ready last year during his prep stint at Sunrise is going to be the guy who gets the redshirt?

The decision to "redshirt" a player is and game-by-game decision throughout the year. So there are a lot of inputs that occur during the course of a year that determine if a player will be held out for the entire year.

Though you can take a redshirt off if the situation arises it doesn't happen often. I can't recall it happening once under HCGM but I could be wrong. One thing that makes it less likely is once a player redshirts he gets less immediate attention making it harder to insert him into the rotation.

Obviously, injuries are the #1 reason for pulling a redshirt but when you have a roster of 8 newcomers it is really hard to know if the guys you expect to be most ready to step up will actually do that. Of course, the later you get into the season the less likely a coach is to wreck a redshirt although it does happen o occasion.

Interestingly, we had 4 starters injured at one point in the Final Four season, but didn't pull a redshirt off the bench. Was that because 3G didn't think the redshirters would help (don't remember who they were), or because he prefers to tough it out instead of jack up a player's eligibility over the long term? Short term pain versus long term gain philosophy, I suppose. Who were the redshirts that season?
