HCGM spends an AWFUL LOT of time plugging Wessel. It's almost shameless. The question was basically asked "who have you really liked?" And he goes on about Wessel for like 5 minutes. Says he's playing better, he's a winner, says his record is 83-2 in games where he posted stats.
Coach is high on Wessel. What else do you need to know? :)
He also says all of the newcomers are showing flashes. It's a long listen, but I enjoyed it. Wessel is the starting PF. He didn't even mention any other forwards by name. He didn't even barely mention the big three (guards) more than about 10 seconds. It was like Evan Wessel hour...it starts around the 8 minute mark in the long video.
Football: 30-7 (81%) 1 State Championship
Basketball: 126-4 (97%) 3 State Championships, 2 MVC Championships, 1 MVC Tournament Championship, 1 NCAA Regional Championship, 3 NCAAs, 1 Undefeated Season
Total: 156-11 (93%)
You can point out all the other great players he has played with, the wonderful situations into which he has been dropped, but at the end of the day, that is an awfully large sample size to chalk up to coincidence. In basketball, he has played in parts of more seasons (6) than losses (4). Look at it this way: even if I don't include lesser titles from HS (city league, etc), in basketball Wessel has been a part of 3 more Championships than losses. 7 championships. 4 losses.

I'm on the Shaq bandwagon and I'm not even sure such a thing exists yet.

Marshall said he has four starters locked in — VanVleet, Cotton, Carter and Baker — and a group of three or four more who might move up in the rotation. Wessel is certainly in that group and junior center Bush Wamukota and freshman forward Rashard Kelly are on most days.
“More important for me is whoever those eight or nine guys are going to be,” Marshall said.
▪ Baker will start the season as the backup point guard to VanVleet. Freshman Corey Henderson Jr. is on call behind Baker, as is Cotton. Holland is playing more at shooting guard.
“He’s improving his handle, but he’s more of an off-guard,” Marshall said.

In other words, it's not going to be Henderson, Kelly or Bush W. That narrows it down quite a bit. I absolutely can't believe that it could be Brown or Nurger though. And Glass would be the first JUCO since the dawn of time, so even that is unlikely. Interesting situation. GOOD situation.

Brown is the only redshirt candidate in my view. We won't waste a year on Glass, Kelly and Nurger are going to play. Wamukota fits both (won't waste and will play), Shaq and Holland already have, leaving Brown and Henderson. I believe Henderson will see time. Just my opinion.

A year in the program without burning eligibility would benefit all involved greatly.
We would be fine without him this year
OTOH, if you view this from prism of what is best for the team then I don't know if B-Wam would still be at the top of the list or not. I will have to defer to 3G on that one.

Here is a young man who has only played the game 3 years. Who knows what the quality of instruction and competition was in Kenya his senior year in high school. His one year at NAIA Wiley College would be comparable to a year in a good high school league. Then his one year at Kilgore. This guy is a basketball toddler at this point. A redshirt year would represent 25% of his basketball career. Hard to believe he would not have by far the steepest learning curve.

In Paul Suellentrop's breakdown of this year's team he at least mentioned every scholarship player except Zach Brown. I don't know if there is anything to be implied from that or not in terms of who might redshirt.
