Wait a minute. Wessel is gonna graduate this year, transfer to UNO (eligible immediately) and play with his kindred spirit, Jake White, as seniors.

There's your answer to the question of who isn't coming back. It was never that he was going to be done with basketball. Carter, Cotton, Baker and Wessel. Wessel would be a huge get for the right program.

When you mentioned his skipping the redshirt (it was he and Jake who both opted to play as freshmen), it reminded me he's still limited by the injury season if he wanted to transfer. He can't transfer unless he graduates... And the word is he will graduate. That got my wheels turning. Wouldn't that be an ironic/fitting "full circle" conclusion to both of their careers?

Yes. Wessel and White were asked to RS as freshman, but chose not to.

not everyone can play and that doesn't mean they aren't any good. We have a lot of upperclassmen that will play as any minutes as they need to win the game. Freshmen have to earn minutes and may not get a lot, that's just how it's gonna be.

If you don't want to get this kid as much experience as you possibly can while using up a year of eligibility then you might as well cut him now. Then again, who knows, Shaq might come on strong and contribute 10-12 minutes a game. Time will tell.

This article was written about 4 weeks ago. http://www.kansas.com/sports/college...le2484394.html

Doesn't sound to me like a kid who has given up on the program nor a coaching staff that has given up on the kid.
I can't wait to finally see all of the guys play. Fortunately, the first game is literally next Saturday! Next saturday... Shocker basketball is back.

Now that I think about it, it's almost high time for an official pregame thread! What say you @forevershockerfan:? It's time to start diggin up info on our first victim and speculating who will play. We may see a lot of all these redshirt candidates next Saturday (a week and a half) since it's an exhibition. You can play anyone you want for that type of game, right?

We've got schedules, preseason rankings/valley standings and even tickets being picked up. We've even got a solid prediction from Dan Muller that the Redbirds should be ranked in the top 10 and are more likely to contend for a national title than WSU. All that's left is to let the games begin!

Trust me, Bush should redshirt if you are looking for the best possible return on investment.

A year in the program without burning eligibility would benefit all involved greatly.

We would be fine without him this year

I watched the news tonight and caught a brief plug on the Shockers upcoming season and exhibition. Nothing much was said, but Marshall was on saying "We don't coach effort. Players know what is expected up front when they are allowed to attend practice during their visits. They commit knowing what kind of effort is expected. If we are still having to coach effort with someone, we won't spend very much time on that person."

That was terribly paraphrased, but I think I got the point right.

Hopefully, that answers some questions some may have regarding Shaq.

There was no useful context that I could pick out, but I do have to wonder exactly why he would say that.

My guess, he is riding the shat out of Shaq like a bull to be tamed in every outlet HCGM can find.... but the kicker is that he's doing it because Shaq is good and Coach knows it but Shaq is standing in his own way. It's just that Coach believes the team actually needs Shaq and he can't let him fail.

There's a healthy dose of speculation to bother the realists :)

No. Put that back. It's not the one, but man that was a great interview... straight from the horse's mouth.

HCGM spends an AWFUL LOT of time plugging Wessel. It's almost shameless. The question was basically asked "who have you really liked?" And he goes on about Wessel for like 5 minutes. Says he's playing better, he's a winner, says his record is 83-2 in games where he posted stats.

Coach is high on Wessel. What else do you need to know? :)

He also says all of the newcomers are showing flashes. It's a long listen, but I enjoyed it. Wessel is the starting PF. He didn't even mention any other forwards by name. He didn't even barely mention the big three (guards) more than about 10 seconds. It was like Evan Wessel hour...it starts around the 8 minute mark in the long video.

Based the contents of people who have seen practice, Shaq is putting forth plenty of effort, he just still continues to make mistakes. I think that probably frustrates the coaches, and is the reason he gets a lot of tough love, but isn't necessarily a reason you run somebody out of town. I mean, we're still talking about a freshman here, and it does take big guys longer to develop.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

I think he was actually talking about Fred, Ron and Tekele because they shut other teams down without even trying. Coach sometimes gets tired of how they always win without putting forth much effort, and maximum effort is something he values.
