Marshall became the most hated coach in the history of the MVC his first year, when he had a Thursday night team in St. Louis and got ejected from a game for getting two T's. That hatred grew over the years as Marshall's candor and inability to suffer fools got a lot of media coverage.
It's kind of odd right now. Other MVC fans still like to think they hate Marshall, but 3 consecutive NCAA bids, a F4, a #2 national ranking, and a 35-1 season is starting to confuse those fans a bit. Then there's WSU keeping Marshall after he was getting offers in the $3 mill range. At that point the hatred reches a point where it can no longer be expressed on the "hate" scale. Hating him just doesn't work any more. they still hate him, but it's not the same as when he was coaching a Thursday night team.
Mark Mangino wasn't a nice guy. Ask KU fans how it worked out for them to get rid of the mean coach. Lots of people hated Mangino. Unfortunately he was working for Lew Perkins who never saw a FB progrm he didn't want to destroy.
