  • Quick thoughts with too many things to do tonight:

    1. Baker is an effing man child. He may be twice as good as he was last year. Insanely fit, athletic and Awesome, and yes, that's with a capital a.
    2. VanVleet. Kid's amazing.
    3. Carter is a beast
    4. Cotton. Same old Tekele.
    5. Evan will play a lot. Very very good. MAN.
    6. Nurger. Better than anticipated. Moves well. Excellent skills and can really shoot it.
    7. Henderson Backup PG is good for the next 2 years. Kid is good right now.
    8. Kelly Not flashy but he's another MAN.
    9 Holland Will play plenty.
10 Wamukota complained of back pain and it didn't sit well with Coach
11 Morris was being grilled on the stationary to go harder every minute
12 Brown looked a little lost but has skills
13 Glass looks really lost. Long way to go.
    14 Simon Grandparents still loaded.
15 Bush Happiest guy in the world.
16 Iowa guy must like getting his ass beat regularly.

      Somebody's gotta do it!

Thanks for the heads up! I had to coach tonight, but really REALLY wanted to be at Koch! Ugh.

Good write up but especially enjoyed this.

        • I was extremely impressed with what Baker was able to do with Cotton guarding him. COTTON!!

Henderson couldn't hang with Fred. Who can? Otherwise, he looked good.

Plenty has been said about Carter and it's all true. I thought Nurger did a great job on DC, but he just kept scoring anyways.

Nurger is a player! Shooting, defense, footwork, running the floor. All high level. He needs to get stronger.

          Wessel will get minutes.

Holland, Brown, and Kelly all disappeared. Can't say they were bad, but didn't get the impression that they were ready to contribute at a high level.

          Glass looked completely lost.

I want to see Shaq and Bush be successful.

            • Very impressed with Darius--better range. Good to see Evan get his shot back--hopefully it lasts throughout the season. Henderson's shot is so pure, the net hardly moves. Nurger is going to be a stud.

In light of the fact that the guys already practiced and probably lifted today, they looked and played pretty well. The other 3 superstars--VanVleet, Baker and Cotton continue to be solid. I was hoping for a steal and breakaway dunk by Tekele.

Very excited for this season to start.

I had the exact same impression on all of this. With Kelly I felt like he chose to stand out as the guy who played his role and didn't make mistakes. He was forgettable tonight only if you weren't looking for the right things. He played his spot, looked strong, defended Wessel adequately and even had one nice power move for a basket WHEN THE BALL CAME TO HIM. He played in his system. I think he is probably the one who is really locked into Marshall as far as the newcomers go in that particular position. Tekele was never a flashy player when he was new either. I hope Kelly is Tekele 2.0 at PF down the road.

                • Based on 20 minutes of basketball and missing two centers (who will be left out) this would be my rotation:

                  1) FVV, Henderson
                  2) Baker
                  3) Cotton, Wessel
                  4) Carter, Kelly
                  5) Nurger

Holland is my ninth man, and Brown will still get meaningful minutes, but is buried on the bench. Need one of Wamukota/Morris to contribute.

Yep this is it right here based on tonight. How great is it to have landed Nurger, a mostly ready to go freshman center at the last minute? He makes you feel pretty good about the 5 at the moment

                    • Any thoughts on who red shirts this year? Is Glass a likely candidate based on what any of you saw?

And thanks to all for the rundowns!

The highlight of the scrimmage for me was seeing Carter raining in jump shots from all over the place. I also liked the fact that Wessell did well in the 3-pt shooting contest even though he lost to Baker in the final round. A fan sitting next to me told me that Rauno Nurger would have probably gone to Kentucky if Willie Cauley-Stein had decided to go pro. First time I ever heard that one! But, from what I've seen of Nurger, he is going to be very good at WSU!

                        • I'll say this, I feel much better about our front court after tonight.

And that's with Bush and Shaq both riding pine.

                          • One thing I did notice about Nurger that wasn't all sunshine was that he was completely out of control, sideways and practically running into people for some of his perimeter hedges on defense. They looked like the kind of thing that might generate bad fouls in a real game. Ron would just avoid the contact but I think an opposing guard might take advantage

Just based on tonight, Glass and maybe Brown could both benefit from a RS year. Although Brown and Kelly both went to prep school last year, they both turned 19 AFTER school started. Marshall doesn't RS JUCOs, BUT, Glass needs to get stronger and it wouldn't be awful to have a scholarship player graduate in 2017.

OTOH, it was 20 minutes of action.
