@Shockerangry It depends on voting parameters. We were told not to vote based on current status.
Now there's a great explanation, given the best coaches right now premise of this list...

yep, i prefer marshall over all of them.
My point was that you would find a significant correlation between coach ranking and who you asked.

Ask Duke fans, and coach K wins the poll
Ask Kentucky fans, and coach Cal wins the poll
Ask WSU fans, and coach Marshall wins the poll

That was really all I was trying to say.

Obviously the fact that different coaches fit better/worse in different environments is part of this, as the coach's personality needs to fit well with his fanbase. However, in some cases, I think it is simply the human element of "my guy is the best" that influences people's votes.

With all respect, this is not Einstein type of information. But anyone with brains would agree that what Marshall has done here is so remarkable and I am doubtful that it could have been duplicated by the others above him on this Top 50 list.

        • I think #8 is just about right. You could argue he's above Ryan, but you could also argue he's below boeheim. I have no problems with this spot. You have to remember a lot of these guys did pretty great things at smaller schools before going to the school they are currently at.

And you can hate on KU all you want. I understand why, but you can't really argue how great Self is as a coach. 10 straight conference titles in a league that's produced the likes of Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin is just nuts.

Whether or not Self is a good/great coach isn’t debatable, but give ole WstateU a boat load of blue chip McDonald’s AA’s and we’ll talk. I’ve argued this topic with KU fans for many years; hell, even Mike Cohen would have success with KU’s talent. Seriously, ‘great’ players make coaches look ‘great’. Coach Marshall might be the exception; he’s done it with ‘very good’ players. Give him KU and Kentucky talent and 'Katy bar the door'.

            • First you said my post was "total garbage, puke", now this?

EDIT: THE QUOTE ABOVE WAS NOT SHOCKMONSTER. MY MISTAKE.

That could be said of every post on this board. Why single out my post? I never said it was earth shattering, but it was relevant to the discussion.

I do not doubt that you feel there isn’t any other coach out there who could have duplicated Marshall's accomplishments at WSU. That is your opinion, it is reasonable, and you are entitled to it.

Personally, I do not think there are dozens of coaches out there who could have matched what Marshall has done at WSU, but I do hold the opinion that coach K, or Self, or a couple others very likely could have. You can disagree, but this is not a brainless opinion to hold.

Why are you being so hostile about something that reasonable people can disagree on? Did you catch that Shocker Fever that I’ve heard is going around recently?

              • JH4P. The part of your post that wasn't new info was your statement that Duke fans think coach K is best as do Kentucky and WSU fans like their coach best in a poll. That was all that I said (actually you said) was brainless. And I did try to say it respectfully. :)

                • The guy just can't keep his typing fingers from spelling out my name. The obsession with me is sorta pathetic, especially when you consider the "better guy" is "ignoring" me for the better of the board.

Bill Self. For no other reason than to get front row tickets to his first press conference where he explains the coaching change. :)

haha yep. In a group of 350 coaches, in a national ranking, they are in an almost identical spot...and it's debatable, too.

                              • Since we know where Coach Mashall ranks, interest in this thread fell off.

                                A mini-update

No. 8: Gregg Marshall, Wichita State

                                No. 7: Bo Ryan, Wisconsin

                                No. 6: Bill Self, Kansas

                                No. 5: Rick Pitino, Louisville

                                No. 4: Mike Krzyzewski, Duke

No. 3: Tom Izzo, Michigan State
