2012: Arizona was outside the top 50 and missed the NCAA tournament altogether in Miller's 3rd year as head coach. Syracuse was a 1 seed that made the Elite 8.
2013: Arizona was a 6 seed that made the Sweet 16. Syracuse was a 4 seed that made the Final 4.
2014: Up until the last month of the season, both teams were neck-and-neck for #1 in the country. Arizona finished well and Syracuse sort of tanked.

I know this poll is about "what have you done for me lately", but it seems like only a "recruiting junkie" who is zeroing in on the most recent of the most recent could place Miller ahead of Boeheim.
While ESPN has improved their recruiting coverage in recent years, they are still dominated by Rivals IMO. Rivals has had Arizona's classes as no worse than 4th place each of the last 4 seasons. Besides being Kenpom #2 last year, Arizona is in everyone's preseaon top 5 if not top 3. Syracuse is unranked in many of those polls and now has to compete in the brutal ACC. The trend is definitely in favor of Arizona/Miller.

You say I'm focusing only on the most recent of the most recent then you stop at 2012. In 2011 Miller won the PAC 12 and made an Elite 8, Syracuse lost in the Round of 32. If you go back to Miller's years at Xavier, he clearly had better tournament results than Boeheim at Syracuse (Miller 6 tourney wins, Boeheim 2). I don't understand your supposed shock for one coach being ranked one whole spot over the other. The only surprise (for me) is that they were both outside of the top 10.

    • Do you know what you can do with those rankings? Marshall hasn't had a top 15 class ever, and he is competing with everyone. Rankings aren't all they are cracked up to be. Take them and ESPN for what they are worth and that is not a great deal. :)

First, posters are complaining about other posters going back too far in time regarding a coach, now we make an about face for Miller. While I agree with your statement regarding Miller's "up trend", you also make a point of how great his recruiting classes have been over the last 4 years (implying that they have been better than Boeheim's and probably have). Yet, if we're looking at more than just 1 year (which, if we're not, makes this whole exercise kinda silly), it would appear Boeheim would have done more with less over the last 3 years total. Even as a #1 seed, Miller hasn't done what Boeheim did and make a F4.

I really think they are pretty much a push. My problem is that I think Boeheim's team have underperformed expectations more than over. So I'm not sure where that leaves me regarding Miller.

        • Keep in mind that Boeheim wears women's underwear and is a vegetarian. From what little I have read about Miller, he's a meat eater that goes commando. I just want to make sure we have all the data points out there, so we can make a more informed decision.

                            • This is getting pretty good, isn't it?

Although, it's important to remember that this is the same list that had some pretty ridiculous placements earlier. I won't complain, though, because a list that respects the Marshall and places him top 8 or better is automatically infallible and exempt from criticism.
