  • Mizzou Fan Here With a Few Questions

First, let me say that I know absolutely nothing about the coaching search at Mizzou, other than the publicly talked about names mentioned, which have included Gregg Marshall, and I certainly respect your program, and not just because of Marshall.

What would you say is the main reason Marshall hasn't eliminated himself publicly like he did, say, the NC State job? I can certainly understand why he would want to stay at your school where he is loved and appreciated and where things are going very well. To me it would make sense to say something and alleviate concerns.

Also, what are the attributes that make him great as a coach? I am a huge college basketball fan. I rooted for the Shockers in the tourney out of respect and admiration for doing things the right way.

He just doesn't do it. He gets brought up as a candidate in a ton of different coaching searches, and from what I've heard he just gets tired of being asked about it.

As far as what makes him great coach, he's good at everything. As far as recruiting goes he's a great evaluator of both talent and character. He recruits good kids. The team has consistently outstanding chemistry. Problems off the court are really rare.

Thanks for that. One of the things I love about your program is you get kids who love their team and stay and have a high basketball IQ. I hate watching college basketball teams where you have one-and-done kids. There is something beautiful about team basketball. When it's right, it's like watching ballet. That's what you have, and what we've been putting up with is ugly to watch.

Marshall didn't eliminate himself publicly from the Mizzou job for the same reason he didn't eliminate himself from the Tulsa or Bowling Green jobs.

Because outside of this board there isn't any real talk in Wichita of him taking the MU job. I don't think anyone, outside of these types of outlets, actually consider this a possibility. Why make an announcement about something that isn't an issue? Plus, I don't recall him ever publicly making a statement of that nature about any job his name has come up for. This Mizzou thing is different than some of the others like NC State and UCLA though. There just isn't any talk about it locally and basically it's business as usual around TA town. Plus, he's probably brushing up a little on his game for the upcoming golf tourney.

I have a feeling he might going to Mizzou. I don't understand why he just wouldn't say no like he did to Nebraska and NC State.

Others on here may know more about this than I. But in regards to NC State, I believe there was some actual founded reports of interest between the two. Did he interview? I cannot remember, but there were substantial rumors about it.

Other than some people drawing the line between Marshall and Mizzou, only because Mizzou is a BCS job, and Marshall is sought after, I have seen no reports of contact, or even interest in, Marshall. Now this search has been crazy secret, so there could have been contact and we don't know about it. But that would be a difference between the two. I don't remember him making a public scene about any jobs he has turned down in the past. It just makes no sense for him to do so.

We WSU fans live in a world where we are with Wichita no matter what.. Marshall is a professional. I like my job.. But under no circumstances would I ever say.. "I am not ever leaving! I love it here!" That would be silly.

As for coaching. X's and O's is an obvious plus. He has had TREMENDOUS game plans for big games (some of that credit must go to Jans). He makes great in-game adjustments, one of the reasons why we have never really been run out of a gym. Marshall can coach circles around most guys.

Main thing about his coaching, that I think some outside of the program overlook, is his attitude. He has a swagger, a chip on his shoulder, that rubs off on his players. Always confident, always "playing angry" if you will. His guys compete, and if they aren't competing, they just don't play.

One of the main reasons why I think he has had such success here, is that that attitude ^^ fits PERFECTLY with Wichita State. Now I am sure he would have success if he left, he probably would at Mizzou. But his attitude here is what has built this monster of a program the past few years. And he recruits perfectly to fit his style. That attitude makes him hated throughout much of the Valley, and at certain places in the country. But as far as I am concerned, he has been more classy than most coaches, and he just doesn't BS. And we, and Gregg himself, DGAF about anyone else's opinions.

I will say this is the quietest coaching search I've ever observed. There are just zero rumors coming out about anybody that has legs from anywhere that is remotely credible. Sometimes happy coaches like Marshall will go through the process just to see what's out there or to get a raise, but I don't think that's true in Marshall's case.

There is nothing about your post that I can find disagreement with. If given a choice between a team that plays smart and angry an a team that has NBA prospects, I'd much rather have the former than the latter.

The rumor among NC State fans was that Marshall was theirs for the taking if they would've given him a good offer. No idea if that part is true, but based off media reports I think we can definitely say he interviewed and an offer was made.

2 total posts, and very "concerned".

It could also be that he is doing some dancing but will still come home to his wife. Great coaches get recruited. There's nothing wrong with hearing out other schools and going through the process but in the end saying, "Thank you, but no thank you."

He will only make a statement about a job only if he gets interviewed for that job. He has not and will not interview for the Mizzou job.

Until you get tied to EVERYTHING, in which case its best to just ignore most and only talk to the top programs you have a recipricol interest in...which is not many
