I'm with you. Which is why I wielded the personal ban hammer on this guy long ago.

I'm not buying into anything and PLEASE read my post before replying. I DID NOT say that Marshall would be interested in the NBA (I actually don't think he would be or at least should not be). He is far too good teaching young men. I said if an NBA team hired a top 10 college coach that
"top 10" college team would need a head coach. Read people, read.

Hardly. Fever I'm not the imbecile here if you think this couldn't happen. Will it happen -- hell, I don't have a crystal ball but at least I live in the real world. You seem to think that the line ends with WSU -- there is a whole lot of world outside of WSU. Do I hope Marshall stays for a long time, you bet. But I'm realistic enough to realize that things change, people change. Even though you think you are so much smarter than the rest of us -- you aren't. You have no more knowledge of what is going to happen than I do. At least I acknowledge that things could change -- you just put on blinders.

Again, why would Marshall leave one top ten for another? He has 0% chance of being fired in the next 5 years. If he went to another top ten, fans and schools aren't as forgiving.

Because it's cool to coach at one of the five or six premier bball colleges in the country. If Cal leaves UK and Gregg goes there I wouldn't fault him. I think UK, KU, IU, Duke, UNC and UCLA (at least until that was offered and he turned it down) all scare me when they have openings.

I can't imagine that he would (unless whatever he terms his "dream job" open up). But my remarks all hinge on whatever new rules the NCAA puts into effect regarding any advantageous perks the "power" conferences can offer recruits and what limitations may be in effect for the non-BCS conferences in that regard. If the power conferences can offer certain things that we, being in a non-BCS conference are not permitted to offer (even though we can afford to do so), how do you think that will play out.

                • Financially speaking, a case could be made that Marshall has a better financial outlook at WSU.

He basically has an annuity paying him no less than 2 mil a year.

Any new job (depending on the contract) may not go that route. Success at a new school is probable, but not guaranteed. Here....

A bird in the hand vs 1.3 in yge bush argument.

I would say 15-20 years at 2+ mil > 4 or 5 at 3+ mil (and we dont even know MU would offer that.)

On the other hand, he could realistically turn WSU into a UConn type program and he's the legendary Jim Calhoun. Gregg could coach here until he's 75 if he wanted. He would retire a very wealthy man.

I understand your concern (and don't disagree with the reason for concern), but the "BCS" is dead. Yes, you have a "Big 5" remaining, and while the line between them and all other conferences is quite clear in football, it is not nearly so clear regarding basketball and other sports. Will "advantageous perks" apply to football only and to the Big 5? If in other sports, or major sports, I just can't see conferences like the Big East, MWC, and AAC (and to a lesser degree, A-10 and WCC) rolling with being excluded. If a player at a non Big 5 conference makes a name for himself and makes money for a team/conference, should he be excluded from "profiting" while unknowns at a Big 5 team gets such perks? Will teams, regardless of conference, be allowed to "opt in"?

That last question is the key for me. If there is an "opt in" option, conferences like the Big East may be able to survive in basketball as well as teams like WSU, VCU, and Gonzaga who may belong to conferences that may not opt in conference wide.

I'm hoping that any NCAA decision will not exclude teams like WSU. I'm going to wait and see how this "mess" starts to wash out before getting to concerned. But then, maybe I'm giving the NCAA too much credit.

Maybe you should write better. You don't need to reach far that you were referring to Marshall in that post. Write people, write.

                          • It's always risky to give the NCAA credit, Talk -- "too much credit" may be a redundancy.

But I agree: let's wait and see before leaping to conclusions. There are a lot of schools who will not be happy about being relegated to second class status in sports where their programs are emphatically not second class, financially or otherwise (e.g., WSU basketball). And the NCAA has to deal with those schools somehow, and probably not just by telling them, It's our way or the highway. That's why schools have in-house legal departments.

Yes, I was referring to Marshall -- taking the open college coaching job, not the NBA job. I suppose if I turn my head just so, I can see where you may have gotten the idea I was talking about Marshall to the NBA -- but then why would I even mention Michigan State or Florida in the same post since Izzo and Donovan are the two most talked about college coaches that might be interested in a NBA job. Sorry, next time I will spend more time on a post to make sure no one else misinterprets what I am trying to say.

                              • @Shox21:, you were very clear that you were talking about Marshall taking a job like Florida or Michigan State if one of those became open. You never said anything that would make me assume you were talking about Marshall coaching in the NBA. ShoxMVC is simply refusing to acknowledge that he completely misread a perfectly clear post of yours.
