On the other hand, CollegInsiders.com appears to give out various Coach of the Year awards and unsurprisingly, HCGM received the John McLendon Coach of the Year Award. This award is presented to the top collegiate coach regardless of their classification (Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA or JUCO).

Edited to include Tim Miles of Nebraska as the winner of collegeinsiders.com Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award which is presented to the top Division I coach each year. Coach Marshall is also listed as a finalist for this award.

Yeah looking at the list of finalists, probably want to stay away from that Hugh Durham Award, especially since HC3G won it at Winthrop in 06-07.

      2014 HUGH DURHAM AWARD FINALISTS
      Mike Brennan American
      Rick Byrd Belmont
      Tim Cluess Iona
      Steve Hawkins Western Michigan
      Bob Hoffman Mercer
      Ron Hunter Georgia State
      Tony Jasick IPFW
      Tod Kowalczyk Toledo
      Gregg Marshall Wichita State
      LeVelle Moton North Carolina Central
      Jeff Neubauer Eastern Kentucky
      Saul Phillips North Dakota State
      Monte Ross Delaware
      Brad Underwood Stephen F. Austin
      Will Wade Chattanooga

None of these other programs have much of a history. And they all have pretty small basketball budgets compared to WSU, with the closest being Belmont at about $2.38M. Several of them have basketball budgets that are ONLY about half of HC3G's salary.

At the risk of sounding condescending (because I really don't want to be), if all of the other programs on that list are considered mid-major, I don't see how WSU could be classified as anything other than high-major. But I guess it's all relative to the conference were in.
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

Napier won the Cousy Award, probably largely because of his team's postseason run. I don't think it was a very clear choice, but UConn lasted the longest. For example, pick Napier out of the lineup:

          A: 48.4% FG, 41.8% 3PT, 83.0% FT, 4.12 A/TO, 17.9% USG%
          B: 42.6% FG, 39.9% 3PT, 86.6% FT, 1.75 A/TO, 27.7% USG%
          C: 46.8% FG, 38.7% 3PT, 70.5% FT, 1.62 A/TO, 30.7% USG%
          D: 47.0% FG, 44.2% 3PT, 82.4% FT, 1.76 A/TO, 24.4 USG%

For those wondering, Napier was B, Van Vleet was A. C and D were Russ Smith and Nik Stauskas.

Basically, what percentage of a team's possessions end with that player. It takes into account FGA, FTA, and TOs. Fred's usage percentage is low because he look for his own shot and doesn't turn the ball over, whereas Smith takes 13 shots a game, gets to the line a lot, and has twice the TOs.
