  • NCAA tournament trends

    • 1 seeds have never lost to a 16, and have won the title 11 of the last 15 years. But only once have all four #1 seeds made it to the Final Four.
    • At least one 2 seed has lost in the first weekend 16 of the last 17 years
    • 9 of the last 10 Final Fours have had at least one team seeded 3, 4, or 5 (15 total)
    • 6 seeds have lost in the first round 39 times and advanced to the Sweet 16 or farther 41 times
    • 7 seeds haven't made the Final Four since 1984 and have never won a title
    • 8 and 9 seeds have only knocked off a 1 seed 15 times since the tournament expanded in 1985 (out of 112 games)
    • 10 and 11 seeds rarely win their first game, but those that do have good odds of winning another. Usually a couple end of in the Sweet 16 and the rest lose early
    • At one 12 seed has won their first game in the last six tournaments. But no 12 seed has ever beaten a 1 seed in the Sweet 16.
    • A 13 seed has knocked off a four seed six years in a row.
    • 14 seeds have won only 5 times since 1999
    • 15 seeds have won four games in the last two tournaments, but only won four games before that
    • 16 seeds have never won against a #1 seed.
    Additionally:
    • The last 15 championship teams have been seeded in the Top 3.
    • Neither the Pac 12 or B1G has produced a champion in 13 seasons
    • Only 4 times in the last 23 years has the title winner been ranked #1 in the last polls
    • A top four seed has lost in the Round of 64 each of the last six tournaments. A total of 49 such upsets have occurred in the 28 years since the tournament expanded.
    • Top four seeded teams that do lose generally are much better on one side of the ball, for example in 2012 Duke and Missouri had top 10 offenses and sub-80 defenses.
    • Champions don't lose in the first round of their conference tournament
    • At least one of the blue bloods (UK, KU, UNC, Duke, Indiana, UCLA) has made the Final Four in 27 of the last 28 tournaments (last year being the exception).

Interesting coincidence that they really are "blue" bloods, with all but Indiana having some shade of blue as their primary color. Time for some yellow fever.

Blue bloods don't court storm. If you're court-storming, that's fine, almost everybody does it. But that means you're in with the almost everybody, not your own holier-than-thou group.
