Does that mean a soft 9 seed made the final four last year?

" ... a soft 1 seed."

As everyone knows, tournament talk is purely conjecture. The tournament is unpredictable, and that's why it's FUN. It's obvious that Wichita State is a good, possibly great, team. It's also obvious that there are about 20 other good-great teams who have a legit chance come tournament time. Calling someone a "soft 1 seed" or "overrated" is simply a prediction, a wager that we'll lose early in the tournament, allowing them to turn to their friends and say, "See! Didn't I predict this!" These labels have no validation.
It takes very little balls to predict that we'll lose early in the tournament, because that is the popular opinion outside of Wichita. We certainly look like a team that could lose early in the tournament. Know who else could lose early in the tournament? Anyone. It takes real cojones to stand by your team, because anything can happen come March. Last year proved that.

I was curious as to the largest number of losses a #1 seed has ever had, so I went back to 2001 and determined the following:
Seed #1 most losses 7 Avg. Record 30.4 - 4.22001 Illinois 24 7 2003 Oklahoma 27 7 2003 Texas 26 7 2007 North Carolina 31 7 2012 Michigan State 26 7
Seed #2 most losses 9 Avg. Record 25.5 - 5.7
Seed #3 most losses 10 Avg. Record 24.5 - 6.6
Seed #4 most losses 12 Avg. Record 18.7 - 6.0
The #1 seeds have had
0 losses 0 times
1 loss 1 time
2 losses 11 times
3 losses 2 times
4 losses 18 times
5 losses 10 times
6 losses 6 times
7 losses 5 times
The fewest number of losses a #2 seed has had is 2
The fewest number of losses a #3 seed has had is 3
The fewest number of losses a #4 seed has had is 4

Right now there are two teams who should be favorites to win a national championship. Both teams were in the final four last year and are currently undefeated. If you can't understand or accept that then you're either a) an idiot who knows nothing about basketball, b) a fan of some other team, or c) believe that conference affiliation trumps everything. Or all three.

The worst seed a one-loss team has had since 2001 was last year,Murray State at a 6 seed.
The worst seed a two-loss team has had since 2001 is a 2 seed (many teams).
The worst seed a three-loss team has had since 2001 is a 12 seed (Utah State in 2011)"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

To hell with all of 'em, give us a 9 seed again. It's always more fun kickin the crap out of higher seeded teams anyway."Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.
