I like to think I'm pragmatic in my predictions. I make no bones about being a 'realists'. I've been right, I've been wrong, but I roll with it. With that said, since the rest of the Valley sucks, and sucks some more this year, we will not lose at home against any of these wannabes. Now, when we go to ISU B, we'll see what type of prediction I'll make.

It's exciting for teams that average 5000 (or in Loyola's case 2000) to play against a ranked team in one of the best home environments in the country. They tend to play better.
Unless Loyola completely gets rattled, they will put up a good fight and the KU transfer will be launching from all over the court. Shockers tend to wear down teams as the game progresses and it will be the same in this case.
Loyola has something to prove against the MoVal and they'll be fighting like hell to prove it. Just won't be enough fight left in them.

There were not a lot of options available to replace sCUm. With WSU shopping for a new conference, Elgin moved the MoVal center closer to the other teams and away from the middle west.
Loyola isn't going to finish dead last in the MoVal this year which is an equal distribution of admiration for Loyola as it is for disbelief for the MoVal teams they finish above.
Loyola's rise to the top 4 of this league will be swift. History and money can go a long way. Loyola has both.

The last year that you could buy a Rambler automobile was 1969.

                  The Ramblers will score 69.

                  Shox will score more.

Playing the Loyola Ramblers brings back great memories and also shows how much the landscape of College Basketball has changed over the last 50 years.

The Cincinnati Bearcats, then a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, were the two-time defending National Champions coming into the 1962-63 season. Cincy finished the 1962-63 season with only 2-losses. The #1 ranked Bearcats only regular season loss was a 65-64 loss to the Shockers on February 16, 1963 that broke Cincy's 37-game winning streak. The Shocks were lead by Dave Stallworth's 46 points in what may have been the Shockers biggest win ever in the Roundhouse.

In the last regular season game of 1962-63 the #8 ranked Shockers visited Chicago Stadium to take on the #3 ranked Loyola Ramblers. Loyola's only loss of the season at that point was a somewhat of a head-scratching 17-point loss at Bowling Green. The Shocks won that game 73-72 to drop Loyola to #5 heading into the NCAA Tournament. Although the Shocks were a Top 10 team only the MVC Champions went dancing in those days and #1 ranked Cincy still ruled the Valley roost.

As fate would have it Cincy and Loyola would end up playing for the National Championship with two-time defending Champion Cincinnati the favorite. Cincy was lead by Consensus All-Americans Ron Bonham (a 6-5 F) and Tom Thacker (a 6-2 G) and by AP 3rd team All-American point guard Tony Yates who lead Cincy to an 82-7 record in his 3 years.. Loyola was lead by Consensus All-American Jerry Harkness, 6-2 point guard from Harlem, NY and owned wins @Indiana, vs #10 Seattle, vs Arkansas, vs Memphis State, home and home over Marquette, vs Iowa and @Houston.

#1 Cincy destroyed Oregon State 80-46 in the National Semi-Final Game to set up a championship game with the #5 Loyola Ramblers taking out the #2 ranked Duke Blue Devils 94-75 in the other semi-final game. In the Championship Game Loyola prevailed 60-58 in OT to keep Cincy from a 3rd consecutive National Championship.

So it is, that while the Shockers were the only team that year to beat both Cincy and Loyola both Cincy and Loyola have something the Shockers want and are striving for -- a National Championship in men's basketball. While the Shocks have re-visited those glory years a couple of times in the past 50 years, including their current run, Loyola has not. However, let's hope getting the Shocks and Ramblers back together on the basketball court will prove to be good omen for the Shockers chances of reaching that ultimate goal.

With all due respect to Texas Western, the Loyola Ramblers may actually have been the team that change the Color of College Basketball. Although Cincy had a decent number of black players in those days as well as did the Shockers.

The Valley was probably ahead of the "big name" schools in recruiting black players and that had more than a little to do with its reputation as the Valley of Death in those years.

Loyola started the 1963 season 21-0, but lost their 22nd game at Bowling Green (led by future NBA Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond). The very same night, #1 Cincinnati--also undefeated on the season-- lost at Wichita State, breaking the Bearcats' 37-game winning streak.

The Ramblers also started the 1938-39 season 21-0 before losing in the NIT Championship.

The longest Loyola winning streak was 31 games from 1928 to 1930, including a 16-0 season in 1928-29.

More recently, Loyola had a 19-game winning streak in 1985 before they were beaten in the Sweet 16 by Patrick Ewing and defending champion Georgetown.

Seems like we used to play Loyola fairly often as an OOC years ago. I always thought it was strange that they would wear gold uniforms while visiting Henry Levitt arena...thought that since gold was our own "lighter" color, that we should be wearing it at home.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Ron Bonham. That name brings back memories from when I was young and listened to the games on my "state of the art" transistor radio complete with an ear piece. I don't think I have heard that name since almost ever. As I too remember the Ramblers from those days. I told you guys before and I will say it again, I think we are going to be pleasantly by the addition of Loyola in the coming years. Go Shox and Welcome to Rambler 63 even though he has posted a few times before.
