Technically, scholarships are renewed on a year-to-year basis. Think about it: scholarships are typically offered by a college on the prospect that a student has a special talent that will contribute to the stature of the university. But, if you perform below expectation, that scholarship may not be renewed the following year.

The SEC football powers regularly "over-sign" players year after year. It seems to work out one way or another. Of course, it's easier to make the numbers work in football than in basketball. Agree that a transfer is the best option. Occasionally, though, that may not be a realistic option and the university may have to pull their scholarship. I know some bigger schools have private foundations backing them up, who will pick up the scholarship cost from the university itself - have no idea whether WSU has such a benefactor.

Does Bowles scholarship count against the limit? I imagine he will be taken care of, but if he isnt technically on the team playing, wouldnt that be the additional scholarship?

For those of you that don't follow the fantastic work that @tropicalshox: does on the recruiting forum, this is a fantastic incoming class! Kelly is a lunch pail guy that will have the opportunity to contribute early (think Tekele Cotton as a 6-7 forward); Wamukota and Hamilton are raw, athletic beasts; Henderson is a long, athletic high IQ guard, and Brown would have minutes on this year's squad. If we sign Atwood (6-8 JUCO stud), look out! He would be a Darius Carter like Cherry on the top of this class.

In recent memory have there been any players that transferred out and made a meaningful impact for another D1 program?

I believe Ogirri was pretty good at his destination (Wyoming?). Deon Sherrell (Central Michigan?) was another decent D-I transfer under Turgeon. I can't think of any from the Marshall error, but wouldn't be a bit surprised if White finished his career off with a bang.

Didn't Reggie Chamberlain go somewhere and be an impact? Or was it not D1?

Anyone else remember the game when Reggie went down under the basket and Ramon Clemente landed with a foot right on Reggie's temple with all of his weight? I was scared for his future in more than just basketball. I may or may not have been worrying too much, but I remember praying like his life depended on it. Ramon was panicking, the game shut down for a while and EVERYONE was standing around him. He eventually got carted off and went to the hospital. I'm pretty sure he was released shortly.

He wound up finishing pretty nicely with UMKC. In an effort to tie this up, I would say that he was a solid player in a lot of ways but his big weakness was that he was not always quick enough. Hmmmm

He didn't transfer to D-I, but AJ Hawkins played for 2010 NAIA National Champions Oklahoma Baptist, hit the winning 3 pointer and lead the team with 21 points.
