Fred has the following record of layups (getting to the rim) so far:

Not a good percentage. How many of those misses were "unbelievable" that he could be so open and miss such an easy shot? He WILL improve the percentage. But he is getting to the rim 2.6 times per game.

By comparison, Armstead had 94 layup attempts in 39 games, 2.41 per game. However, he made 50 of those for 53.2%.

When I do the plus/minus stats, I build a file of the play-by-play entities. From those, I just scanned for made and missed "layup" entries.

I'm not convinced that these numbers are right. I remembered Fred making multiple layups in the Tulsa game, so I went back to the play by play on the ESPN box score that according to that Fred was 3 for 4 on layups in the Tulsa game.

Looking over the boxscores here are numbers I came up with:

Emporia State: 2-3
WKU: 3-4
W&M: 2-2

Total: 15-31 of 48.4%

It is also worth noting that if we are going to compare getting to the rim, we must include assist numbers because being a penetrating point guard is not just about layups for yourself, but dishing for layups for others. Here are Fred's numbers so far this year and Malcolm's last year:

Fred: 5.5 assists per game
Malcolm: 4.0 assists per game

As far as doing Marshall a favor or helping him by holding him to a high standard. Nobody holds HCGM (and our team) to a higher standard then HCGM.

That was basically my point. It's a little gripe, but I wanted to stay it is not up to DG to put us in the conversation--the final 4, top 20 rpi, the most road wins in the top 20, top 10 in the various power rankings already put us centrally in the conversation; it's a high standard we've earned. And Iowa State is not the standard we are shooting for anyway, not at this moment. We'd be just as high a standard for them.
