For many, especially outsiders, you are who you appear to be unless, in the current year, you prove otherwise. They could care less that you didn't have the chance to play those "better" teams. The other problem is, you can't say they're wrong any more than you can say you're right. Our best win is to another "mid-major" team. That's the way they look at it.
For any undefeated team, being down 15 early to an Evansville, (not to mention being down to MSU by 19), is going to be news. Is this the game they lose? The fact that we outscored them 65-33 over 24+ minutes is not news. As a side note, it wasn't just EU's hot shooting early in the game. Our offense was pretty weak the first 10-12 minutes of the game. Had our offensive been playing average those minutes, there would have been no being behind by double digits.
Add to this, the difficulties many of our OOC opponents have had and playing in mid-major conference that is down this year, it's not that hard to understand why there is still doubters. While beating an underrated #1 Gonzaga last year helped lead us to a F4, it also did us a disservice. Many pundits viewed that loss by the Zags as validation that they weren't that good, losing to another "mid-major" team who didn't even win their regular season or conference tournament titles. Might mention that the Zags 2 regular season losses last year were to the highest ranked teams they faced when played, both higher than anyone we've faced and that their best win was at #22 Okie St, very comparable to our best win. The Zags also didn't take the top spot until all the other contenders had 2 more losses than they did.
We need to enjoy the ride more. This is a historical year for WSU basketball. Back to back historical years. We will have our chance this year, just like last year, and it should be a better chance.
