  • GOI for Monday 1/13/14 (all times CST):

NC Central @ Bethune Cookman, 6:30 PM
    Tennessee State @ UT-Martin, 7:30 PM
#2 Syracuse @ BC, 8 PM on ESPNU
#8 Iowa State vs. #15 Kansas, 8 PM on ESPN

From a poll standpoint, we should probably root for Kansas tonight. Can't do it though- Go Cyclones and then I'll hope they lose @ Texas this weekend.

I reject your premise that a home loss to a team with an RPI of 140 is not a bad loss.

I think the moral of this story is that I'm glad we beat Tennessee, but it would be foolish to expect any SOS help from them at this point.

      • Here is weekly tracking of Texas A&M RealTime RPI and SOS (1/6 was before their win over Arkansas
        RPI RPIRank SOS SOS Rank
        6-Jan 0.4917 177 0.472 242
        30-Dec 0.5076 155 0.4817 215
        23-Dec 0.5002 172 0.4718 240

These are the types of numbers I had casually been aware of, and I watched some of their game against Rice and both teams, to my eyes, were awful.

I am happy to admit that any bcs type program that looks that bad, plays a 200+ rpi schedule and loses to North Texas at home, gets an extra "exageration" tacked on. Teams like WSU aren't often labeled "great" when they are 17-0 and ranked in the top 5, so, personally, I'll be a little extra in the opposite direction.

        Not that anyone cares.

I guess they aren't necessarily "butt-stanky" or "AWFUL", but can we agree that they would be a Thursday night team in the MVC?

If numbers were all that mattered, why play the game?

As someone who has watched A&M in person (At Toyota Center in Houston v. Oklahoma), I can tell you Texas A&M is awful. They don't play smart, they don't play together, and their RPI is definitely inflated.

Realtimerpi had A&M at 140-something prior to updating to show the Tennessee game. Sites vary. Not really sure why as the RPI is a simple formula.

I never said it wasn't a "bad loss". Only argued that calling it a "colossal failure" was quite the exageration. After the doc's statement that Marquette would be a "MVC Thursday night team", I was simply jumping on a theme of exageration on his part.

This has become silly. I'm ready to move on.

                        • I don't think losing to a team 100 spots lower than you in the RPI, at home, is too far off from a colossal failure.

                          • I'd just like to point out something, but when you dumb it down far enough, grown men are arguing about who's definition of the word terrible is correct in describing the quality of a college basketball team. Think about that. Not arguing about who is better, who is even terrible, you are bickering over who's definition of terrible is correct and who's isn't.

No one is going to win. Ever. It is an unwinnable battle.
