  • Scoreboard Complaints

So far, I haven't seen many complaints about the new CKA main video board / scoreboard. I'll go first.

I like the higher-definition video, although the logic of running continuous video of the action on the floor escapes me. What I dislike most is the presentation of the text in the lower quarter of the board, that is, the "scoreboard" portion of the video board.

The scoreboard is too small, too busy and too hard to read. We sit in row 17 pretty much off a corner of the board. We do not have a straight-on view of the board. The game score and clock are OK (albiet a little small), but the team fouls and TOL and the player numbers and stats too small and all of the white lines forming the grid around EVERY SINGLE THING on the scoreboard make it too busy and even more difficult to read.

The grid should be eliminated or changed to a very thin line of a dark color (i.e. subtle red) and the meaningful print should be bigger.

I assume this is a programming job or perhaps there are different templates available for scoreboard display. I would like to see some experimentation leading toward improvement.

The video board / scoreboard should compliment and enhance the experience of the game being played on the floor. I don't think we're there with the current configuration. We have a lot of (too much) advertising, which is fodder for another discussion.

One more question - is there a clock visible anywhere inside CKA now?

    Great post!

Continuous running of the action is excellent as people are often coming and going and you don't miss the action when people are walking in front of you.

Excellent call on the grid. It has to go. It's bad. Making it a dark shade of grey might make it work though.

The continuous running of action is also for the benefit of people using Shockervision, as that is the feed they see. Shockervision has always been painful to watch in the previous years as the "Get Loud" and other replay graphics would take away from the live action. It is infinitely better this year.

We have professionals kicking arse for us with regards to social media (WSU AD marketing), intros/videos (Intake Studios), and scoreboard hardware (Daktronics), but it is as if we ran out of money somewhere along the way and simply tasked an AD intern to handle the design and use of content for the video board. It's like we got a fancy new toy to use, but are too lazy to maximize it.

The OKC Thunder board pic that someone posted in another thread is a PERFECT example of less is more and simple is better. Someone should start there for inspiration in a redesign. Heck, just ask the WSU Graphic Design department to develop a new stats layout. I'm certain it would look better than current.

Great post '85. Everything you stated is accurate. The scoreboard is a great addition to the arena IF used properly. So far, it's a far cry from that. The absence of the time of day clock is mind-boggling. That is kind of an important thing to have around when you're wondering what time it is in the middle of the game. I don't understand why that's not there. Maybe they assume everybody has cell phones and they can just as easily dig it out of their pockets during gameplay. I wouldn't say that helps paying fans out though.

I'm pretty sure there are ways where you don't have to have the exact scoreboard feed piped into ShockerVision, but I'm guessing that's the most cost-effective way so that's why they do it. I know some school video streaming productions don't use a direct feed from the scoreboard.

Do we know if anybody from the athletic department reads this place? I'm pretty sure they do, which really makes you wonder why thoughts and ideas aren't given further consideration down the line. If they aren't here, somebody needs to let them know about this site and let them divulge into what their fanbase is saying about some pretty basic stuff. You would think this would all be corrected on its own or that a busy scoreboard wouldn't pass the eye test the first time, but no, that'd be too easy and professional.

Whether or not they read it here, I am planning on sending something similar to my post to someone in the Athletics department - I have done it before with success and eventual results. I usually send it to some assistant AD and cc the head man. If you offer constructive criticism, they seem receptive to listening.

It seems like they could pull the Shockervision feed off the board from the camera feeds pre-production and then the other game production can be added and run only to the scoreboard and not to Shockervision. It may be a learning experience for everyone, although I would not imagine this simple video production to be very difficult.

There is a lot of "NEW" going in CKA, which is a good thing. I condider these hiccups to be growing pains.

I'd like the entire scoreboard lowered some 4 to 10 feet, whatever is possible and still allow for a 3/4 length of the court heave. From row 13, it is a strain to look up that high and focus quickly. Was worse at the scrimmage where it was even higher because of volleyball.

The new scoreboard almost overwhelms the arena. It was okay to read (I sit in row 4), but I do not care for all the white that much, better more pleasing colors could be used, instead of just what is easy to do. The top and bottom ring advertising is a little much.

IMO, bad contrast. Especially the white borders are bad choices and they screw it all up. It is so ATARI looking. Here is a better choice

All they gotta do is drop the grid and the background. Problem solved.
