I am confused. The way some on this board respond to optimism and excitement, I have to doublecheck my browser to make sure I am actually on a WSU forum. If any of us feel the need for a wet blanket, we can find one at MVCfans, other Valley boards, ESPN, etc. Shockernet is and should be THE place for excited Wichita State fanatics to celebrate the greatness of this basketball era. And it is truly GREAT right now.

I will say it again. We are going to absolutely destroy the MVC this year. And I am going to LOVE watching every second of it. The cream has finally risen to the top and our advantages in coaching, attendance, budget and facilities are creating a Grand Canyon-sized chasm between ourselves and the rest of this league. Sure, there will be close games. Maybe (or maybe not) even a loss or two sprinkled in there. But ain't nobody gonna come close to keeping pace with us over the course of 18 games in the MVC. The average game against WSU will be about as much fun for other Valley fans as a chainsaw abortion.

To get this thread back on topic somewhat: Cleanthony is going to have a hell of a hard time breaking any kind of scoring records this season because we have such a strong supporting cast around the guy. But he is a top shelf stud who, on lesser past teams, would put up 25 ppg without blinking an eye. What kind of numbers does everyone expect from him this season?
Because of the supporting cast, I'll say 17 pts 8 bounds. On another team, I think he could be 20+ and 10+. We'll see though.

The Shox, and Marshall's teams, have historically spread the points around, but..

...how many guys are going to take their own shot when there's a possibility of getting the ball to Early of Baker? This year Marshall has (possibly) the best 2 players he's ever had in a program. Make that 3 - VanVleet has got to be included in that. FVV doesn't ten to look for his own shot if there's passing available.

Early and Baker could have big point season years.

I always thought there may have been some chemistry issues between Durley and Stutz. Their backgrounds coming into WSU were so disparate that I had some concerns. There appeared to be a huge cisconnect in thier work ethics

This could be the best "chemistry" team Marshall has had at WSU. Coming off a F4 does wonders for unity. It also gives the players a good dose of mutual swag.

          Bump.

Cle is now averaging 16 ppg and 6.6 rpg after tonight's action. I get the feeling he's just warming up and his MVC numbers will see continued improvement.

AA discussion is not far-fetched at this time. Our prominence in the press with continued winning will only boost his candidacy further.

I noticed that Cle has scored in double figures EVERY GAME this year! He's 5th in the Valley in scoring and 6th in rebounding. Not bad for a raw D-III JUCO kid.

That would be improbable. I was at that game where Antoine set that record. The opponent was an awful Southern Illinois team. I admit, he did come out on fire from the start. Hitting everything inside and out. (His outside jumper was not an arcing shot, but more like a line drive that scorched the net almost horizontally.) By the second half, all teammates were consciously feeding Antoine. By the last part of the second half, the Salukis were hardly even putting up a pretense of challenging his shots. They seemed to be spectators just like the crowd. For some reason, just can't see that kind of scenario unfolding on a Gregg Marshall coached team.

Cleanthony is the first listed in the 'Honorable Mention' category of Eamonn Brennan's weekly Wooden Award watch, making him the de facto #11 candidate (Brennan ranks the top ten).

This young man has a chance to get some accolades we haven't seen in a long, long time if he plays to ceiling in the MVC.

Plenty of room to climb on that list. I don't see him having any problems getting ahead of Shabazz Napier and 2 or 3 others on that list if he just takes care of business in conference play...

I think it would be tough(but not impossible) for him to get past Marcus Smart, Dougie, and Jabari Parker. They have had a lot of press and exposure that CLE has not had. Just to be a top 4 or 5 candidate though would be very special...

If he's top 10 on the Wooden watch (big if), he is almost certainly on the AA third team or better.

Agreed- he's within striking distance of some amazing honors. I am sure his fortunes are at least somewhat tied to our ability to stay in the top 10/rise to the top 5 the rest of the way. The more visibility, the better his odds.

Of course he also needs to come out and absolutely dominate those slugs from the Illinois schools in conference play.

Cle boosts his ppg to 16.5 after tonight's game, the highest since Jason Perez's 20.2 in 1999-2000.

Baker is obviously suffering from the ankle. His game has not been the same since he hurt it. That's giving Cle more opportunities to put up some stats. Cle also seems to have a pattern (2 is a small sample size) of staarting the season a bit slow and then coming on.

With 22 points and 14 rebounds tonight, Cleanthony is now at 16.6 ppg and 6.9 rpg.

From the beginning of the season I've thought 17 and 7 is the numbers that Cle needs on a top 25 team. I have to agree. If he maintains these averages through the end of the season he's going to be an AA, and MAYBE he'll get a permanent seat in the rafters?!

He keeps playing lime he did tonight and that seat is all but guaranteed.
